MOUNT CLEMENS — Get your sneakers ready, because Mount Clemens City Sneakers is about to get warmed up for its spring season of outdoor fun and fitness.

While the group — organized and planned by members of the Downtown Development Authority, the business community, the Macomb Family YMCA and Macomb County — is a year-round activity, City Sneakers is kicking off its spring season on May 23 at the Rec Bowl, 40 Crocker Blvd in Mount Clemens. Participation is expected to grow considerably during the warm months, according to founder and organizer Linda Busch.

As a member of the board for the Macomb Family YMCA, Busch was eager to start a noncompetitive club that gave people a chance to get out, get fit and meet their neighbors, while providing exposure to Mount Clemens businesses.

“When we started last year, we had maybe 125 people show up,” Busch said. “More than 50 percent of them are walkers. We get multi-generations.”

Each Tuesday, running and walking enthusiasts alike are invited to meet at a different Mount Clemens restaurant. The meeting time each week is 5:45 p.m., and the departure time is 6 p.m. From there, City Sneakers members will run or walk the distance of their choice: 2 miles, 4 miles or 6 miles, then returning back to the starting point, where participants will enjoy refreshments and food specials at the respective restaurant.

Routes take runners and walkers around downtown and through residential areas, and there is no cost to get involved.

“People like how friendly the group is and enjoy getting in some physical activity while enjoying the great neighborhoods in Mount Clemens,” Busch said.

City Sneakers meets rain, shine or snow.

One of the more faithful runners who will run as a City Sneakers member is Jason Davidson.

Davidson said he’s one of a handful of City Sneakers participants who kept running each Tuesday through the fall and winter.

“I showed up each day during the winter; if it was snowy or slushy weather, I ran,” said Davidson.

Davidson agrees that City Sneakers has turned more people on to getting out and getting fit, while enjoying the camaraderie.

“What’s nice about it is you get to set your own pace,” said Davidson, who has helped some of the new members set a pace that’s good for their fitness level. “I probably met more people that way.”

He added that he really enjoys what comes after.

“I’ll get a Rec Burger,” he said of the Rec Bowl’s popular burger. “It’s a pretty darn good burger.”

In addition to the Rec Bowl, this season’s meeting spots include Orleans, Polski’s, Three Blind Mice, Pub 1281, O’Halloran’s, Bentley’s Road House, Bath City Bistro, Madison’s, Your Mother’s and Buffalo Wild Wings.

On the day of the kickoff, Busch said they will raffle off a Fitbit, as well as a pair of shoes donated by New Balance. City Sneakers will also be selling T-shirts, with all proceeds benefiting the Macomb Family YMCA.
