MACOMB TOWNSHIP — At its July 27 meeting, the Macomb Township Board of Trustees honored 15-year-old Sophia Vitale for her lifesaving actions.

While working as a waiter at a Coney Island on Hall Road on July 7, Vitale noticed an elderly customer who had passed out, and she performed CPR on him until an ambulance arrived.

“As the father of daughters, I think what I am most grateful for is that there are people that are good examples for them,” Township Supervisor Frank Viviano said. “My girls are 11 and 8, and they really look up to girls in your age group, so I appreciate that you are out there doing the right thing.”

As part of the board’s resolution honoring Vitale for her actions, July 27, 2022, was made “Sophia Vitale Day” in the township.

Sanitary sewer contract awarded
Also on July 27, the board voted unanimously to award the contract for upcoming sanitary sewer repairs to Pamar Enterprises, which provided an estimate of $10,532,170.49 for its services.

The project calls for replacing Pump Station 10 with a submerged pump station, making various upgrades to Pump Stations 8 and 11, constructing more than 9,500 feet of 24-inch force main pipelines and the construction of 1,330 feet of 10- and 12-inch sanitary sewer.

The $10.5 million cost of the project is a significant savings over the original estimated cost of about $16 million in 2018, thanks to the same contractor working on multiple projects in the township.

“Pamar is owned by Dan’s Excavating,” Kevin Johnson, township Department of Public Works director, said. “Dan’s Excavating (is the contractor) on the 23 Mile widening project, so there is going to be a lot of work in conjunction with each other.”

Work is expected to begin after Labor Day and will take about two years to complete.

Police officer approved at L’Anse Cruese
The board unanimously approved a request from L’Anse Cruese Public Schools to share the cost of assigning a Macomb County Sheriff’s Office deputy at L’Anse Cruese North High School.

The arrangement is a 50-50 split between the district and township for the deputy, which will have an overall cost of $22,785 for the rest of 2022 and $70,042 and $72,002 for 2023 and 2024, respectively. The officer will operate as a regular patrol deputy on weekends and other times when school is not in session.
