Winter sports season is upon us

We still have the football, volleyball and girls swimming state finals to come, but the winter sports season is set to kick into gear with eight sports taking center stage.

Here’s a breakdown of all the winter sports, including their season start dates, playoff start dates, and state finals dates and locations.

Practices for all the winter sports have begun, with the exception of girls basketball, bowling, skiing and wrestling (all Nov. 12), and boys swimming (Nov. 19).

 

Basketball
The schedules have been flipped this season, with the boys season tipping off first.

Boys basketball teams across the state will hit the court for the first of 20 games starting Nov. 26. The boys basketball state playoffs start Feb. 25, with the culmination at the state finals March 14-16 at Michigan State University.

The 20-game 2018-19 girls basketball season begins with first games scheduled for Dec. 3. The girls basketball state playoffs begin March 4, and the state finals are set for March 21-23 at Calvin College.

 

Bowling
Bowling teams all over the state will hit the lanes for 24 regular-season matchups beginning Dec. 1. Regionals are set for Feb. 22-23. The bowling state finals will take place March 1-2 at various sites still to be determined.

 

Competitive cheer
Cheerleading teams will take to the floor for a 12-meet regular season starting Nov. 19. District meets are set for Feb. 15-16, and regionals take place Feb. 23. The state finals are slated for March 1-2 in Grand Rapids.

 

Gymnastics
Gymnastics season begins Nov. 17, with teams slated to compete in 15 regular-season contests. Regionals take place March 2. The gymnastics state finals are set for March 8-9 at Rockford High.

 

Ice hockey
Prep ice hockey teams begin the season Nov. 12 and will play 25 regular-season games. Regionals are set for Feb. 25 to March 2. State quarterfinals take place March 5-6, with the state semifinals and finals scheduled for March 7-9 at the USA Ice Hockey Arena in Plymouth.

 

Skiing
Boys and girls skiing season begins Dec. 8, with teams competing in 17 regular-season contests. Regionals take place Feb. 11-15. The state finals are set for Feb. 25 at Schuss Mountain (Division 1) and Boyne Mountain (D-2).

 

Boys swimming
The boys swimming season begins Dec. 1, with teams participating in 17 regular-season meets. Dive regionals are set for Feb. 28. The state finals take place March 8-9 at various sites.

 

Wrestling
Wrestling season begins Dec. 5, with teams competing in 14 regular-season contests.

The postseason is split between individual and team tournaments. On the team side, district action is set for Feb. 6-7, followed by regionals Feb. 13, and then the finals will be held Feb. 22-23 in Kalamazoo.

In the individual tournament, district action is set for Feb. 9 with the regional round set for Feb. 16, then culminating at the state finals March 1-2 at Ford Field in Detroit.
