A fast start propelled the Warren Mott boys basketball team to a 53-29 Dec. 4 win over Sterling Heights High.

The Marauders led tip to buzzer in the game — Mott's home opener. The Marauders are 3-1 early in the season

"It was all about the defensive end," Mott coach Jeff Olind said. "We came out and were aggressive on defense, and we were able to get stops and turn those into baskets."

Marauders senior guard Darius Willis led all scorers with 19 points. Willis scored the game's first eight points, as Mott jumped out to a 12-0 lead. The Marauders led 16-1 after the first quarter and 27-8 at halftime.

Mott's aggressiveness was key, as the Stallions (0-3) looked to slow the game down with a 2-3 zone on defense. The Marauders got several runouts in the game, which did not allow Sterling Heights to settle into its defense.

"They do a good job of packing it in on defense," Olind said, "so we wanted to create as many running opportunities as we could and I think we did a good job."

Ten Mott players recorded at least one basket in the game.

The Stallions were led by junior guard Noah Jarnot, who scored eight points in the contest.

Mott's next game is against Warren Cousino at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 on the road.

Sterling Heights will look to pick up a win when it takes on Harrison Township L'Anse Creuse at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 on the road.
