The state volleyball tournament got under way across the state last week with the playing of the district round.

Locally, Eastpointe East Detroit took the court in the Class A Grosse Pointe North district. After drawing a bye, the Shamrocks fell to the host team 25-12, 25-7 and 25-7 a district semifinal match. Grosse Pointe South defeated St. Clair Shores Lakeview in other half of the draw, setting up a North-South final Nov. 3, when the Norsemen advanced to regionals after a 3-2 victory.

UTICA — Hoping to prove true the old saying that, “two heads are better than one,” Jeff LaPratt and Lisa Sanford have joined forces at Utica High in an effort to lead the volleyball squad back to its glory days.

LaPratt, who has coached JV basketball at Utica and volleyball for the past eight years at Heritage Junior High, serves as the motivator and disciplinarian, while Sanford, who previously coached at Utica Ford II for four years and played volleyball at Central Michigan University, brings a player standpoint to the coaching tandem.

The core of the West Bloomfield High volleyball team has put its time in on the court over the years, and coach Julian Wargo believes the Lakers are ready to turn that experience into a championship.

“When you have eight returning players, six of them are seniors, they want to go out on a high note,” he said. “They want to be part of something bigger, and I know that’s what they’re working hard towards.”

At press time, West Bloomfield was 1-0 in the Oakland Activities Association White Division and 3-6-2 overall.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — The Chippewa Valley volleyball squad certainly has had more than its share of struggles in recent years.

In the past two seasons the Big Reds went 21-56-13, finishing in the bottom half of league standings.

STERLING HEIGHTS — The Utica Stevenson volleyball team is off to a strong start this season.

After winning the Aug. 19 MAC Kickoff tournament, the Titans were 17-0-2 at press time. With an experienced group — nine players returned from last year’s 29-16-6 campaign — coach Paul Drdul said he likes what he’s seeing early on.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Take a glance at the 2011 St. Clair Shores South Lake volleyball roster and you’ll notice it immediately: The Cavaliers are a very young team.

Symone Hicks and Margaret Elias are the only two seniors on the squad. The rest of the roster is a mix of mostly juniors, a few more sophomores and one freshman. At press time, however, coach Liza Rogers hadn’t finalized the team.

Utica Eisenhower is determined to recapture what made its volleyball program one of the Macomb Area Conference’s and state’s standout squads.

Two seasons ago the Eagles had the right ingredients — six seniors, a high-octane offense and court chemistry — to go far, finishing the season 39-10-3 and making the program’s first state quarterfinal appearance.

This year has the makings of another special season.

FRASER — Last year, seven was a lucky number for the Fraser High volleyball team.

Seven seniors led the Ramblers to a 49-3-4 season that saw the squad go undefeated in the Macomb Area Conference Red Division to win its first league title since 2004 and claim its 17th district title.

In fact, the squad didn’t drop a single game all year until the regional final, and even then, the Ramblers came out winners.

Roxy Duzey’s face was lit with a seemingly permanent smile on what may have been the most important day in her young life.

It wasn’t just any February day; it was signing day for Duzey and her Sterling Heights High friend and teammate Kate Czopek, who both committed to play volleyball at the next level.

Duzey inked her commitment letter to the University of Madonna, while Czopek signed with Saginaw Valley State University.
