TROY — Both the Troy High baseball and Troy Athens softball squads saw their respective seasons come to an end at Lake Orion High June 9 in the Division 1 regional semifinals.

The Colts fell 4-1 to Waterford Mott, ending the season at 24-14.

“It was a great year for us,” Troy coach Tim Mullen said. “I was proud of how hard we worked each day and how we progressed throughout the year.”

Mullen said his players possessed a never-quit attitude that served them well.

“No matter what happened during the course of a game, we stayed mentally in it,” Mullen said. “We had several games that we were down early and came back to win.”

Mullen praised his class of 10 seniors, saying they were key to repeating as district champions.

“I was really impressed with how our seniors treated the younger players and how much chemistry we had on the team,” Mullen explained. “For the season, Robert Banas, Aaron Sexton and Mitch Cochran stood out offensively. Stephen McAvoy and Nick Gajewski were strong on the mound.”

In the affair with Mott, Gajewski went five innings with four strikeouts and four runs, only one of which was earned. Cochran was 2 for 2 with two walks and a double.

“I’m proud of what we accomplished this year and am excited about building on this year’s success,” Mullen said.

Red Hawks fall in regional semifinal
Troy Athens’ softball season came to a close with a 13-3 loss to Clarkston High June 9 in a regional semifinal.

“Clearly, Clarkston is a solid team up and down the lineup. Our girls gave it their best shot, but we came up short. That game does not take away from all of the success our team experienced this season,” Athens coach Kerry Brennan said.

The group finished the year with 17 wins in its last 19 games.

Amanda Wewer, Rachel Van Proeyen, Mikayla Kirtland, Lanie Ellinger, Hannah Kukla, Katy McGarry and Sidney Wickersham made up the senior class.

“The seniors will be greatly missed. They have been the foundation of our program and will leave a strong legacy of what it means to be a member of the program,” Brennan said. “I’m already looking forward to next season. There is a lot of young talent coming up through the program, girls who are excited about softball and have a real love for the game. It will be fun to build upon this foundation and see where it goes next.”
