WARREN — The Warren Woods Tower wrestling team will host a Division 2 regional tournament at 5 p.m. Feb. 17, and coach Greg Mayer hopes to have a home-mat advantage.

“Hopefully, the home crowd will help,” Mayer said after his team’s 68-9 win over St. Clair Shores Lake Shore in a D-2 district final Feb. 10 at Warren Lincoln. “It’s been a long time since we hosted a regional. We’re pretty excited about it. Hopefully, the student body will come out to support us.

“We had a meet earlier this season against Warren De La Salle where the entire student body came out. A lot of them didn’t really know a lot about wrestling, but they liked it. We want that to carry over to the regional.”

The Feb. 10 win over Lake Shore gave Tower its second district title in the last three years.

In the regional semifinals, the Titans (20-6) take on Madison Heights Lamphere. The winner gets either Melvindale High or Farmington High in a regional final.

In the district title win, Tower scored seven pins. Lake Shore heavyweight Tanner Koval recorded his team’s lone pin. Shorians 125-pounder Trevor Tobias put his team up 3-0 after the opening match with a 7-2 decision.

One of the Tower pins came from 135-pounder Joey Schindler. The decision gave Schindler the 100th win of his career.

“It took a lot of hard work to get to that point,” Schindler said after the match. “Hopefully, there’s more to come this year for me and my team.”

Lake Shore coach Sam Leto said he’s proud of how his team fought.

“We have a young team. We just wanted to come in here and put up a fight and see what happens,” Leto said. “Hats off to Tower. They’re a tough team. I thought we hung in there pretty well against them.”

To get to the district final, Tower beat Lincoln 55-21. Lincoln (1-11) downed Tower in a district final last year. Lake Shore (12-15) bested Center Line High 60-12 to get to the district final. Center Line ended the season at 2-6.

“They did what they needed to do tonight,” Mayer said. “We got a lot out of some guys who don’t really get a chance to be in the lineup all the time. It’s things like that, as a coach, you’re proud about.

“Our goals haven’t been met yet. I think they understand that.”
