WARREN — With 17 seconds left in the final match of the night, the applause started on the Warren Woods Tower wrestling team’s sideline.

When the clock expired and the wrestling team recorded another regional championship, the Tower gym erupted.

The Titans (22-6) claimed a Division 2 regional title with a 54-21 victory against Melvindale High Feb. 17. It was the program’s second championship in three years, but first in its own gym.

Tower started the final with three straight pins and never looked back.

“It’s nice to get on a roll like that,” Tower coach Greg Mayer said. “You get a little momentum and that’s good. It’s better than the other way around.”

The Titans scored bonus points in each win with pinfalls from Joey Schindler, Nico Martini, Jack Penote, Jajuan Lovejoy, Nate Pipes, David Stepanian and Chaise Mayer, along with major decisions from Trey Barbour, Joel Radvansky and Stevan Najeeb.

Up next is the D-2 team state final Feb. 26-27 at Central Michigan University. The Titans are one of eight teams left in the division. Tower will face Gaylord High at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 at Central Michigan University.

“I don’t know where we’ll finish, but I know if we compete hard, we’ll represent ourselves, our community, our family and school well,” Mayer said.

In the regional semifinal, Tower beat Madison Heights Lamphere 60-8. Melvindale bested Farmington High 63-16.

Other teams fall in regionals
The Warren Mott wrestling team saw its season end in a 72-12 loss to Hartland High in a Division 1 regional final Feb. 17 at Walled Lake Central. The Marauders ended the season at 11-3.

To get to the regional final, Mott beat Birmingham Seaholm 43-29, and Hartland downed Walled Lake Central 48-16.
