Team wrestling districts getting started

 The Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse wrestling team will begin tournament action at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Anchor Bay High in a Division 1 district semifinal against the host team. The Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse wrestling team will begin tournament action at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Anchor Bay High in a Division 1 district semifinal against the host team. The state wrestling tournament begins with district action Feb. 10 for Divisions 2 and 4, and then Feb. 11 for Divisions 1 and 3.

The regional is Feb. 17 for all four flights.

Following the regional, the team state finals are Feb. 26-27 at Central Michigan University.

Here’s a look at where each local squad will be and where the qualifiers are heading for their respective regionals.

Teams that were in the top 10 of the Jan. 27 www.michigangrappler.com rankings are also noted.

Division 1 on Feb. 11
Lake Orion High — 6 p.m.

Rochester Adams and Rochester High meet on one side of the bracket. Adams has a chance to win the program’s first back-to-back district championships since 1998-99.

Rochester edged the Highlanders in a match earlier this season.

Lake Orion High and Rochester Hills Stoney Creek make up the other side of the bracket.

The district winner heads to the Rochester regional.

Utica High
It’s a battle of Oakland County and Macomb County in the semifinals, with Troy High and Utica High meeting on one side of the bracket, and Troy Athens and Utica Eisenhower (No. 10) on the other.

The champion heads to the Rochester regional.

Novi Detroit Catholic Central — 5:30 p.m.
Catholic Central (No. 1) looks to get back to the state final. The Shamrocks have won three of the last four state championships and open the district with South Lyon High.

Walled Lake Western and Novi High battle in the other semifinal.

The winner moves on to the Canton-Salem regional.

Hartland High — 5:30 p.m.
Hartland (No. 2) finished second in the state last season behind Brighton High. The host team opens the district with Highland-Milford.

Walled Lake Northern and White Lake Lakeland meet in the other semifinal.

The winner moves on to the Walled Lake Central regional.

North Farmington — 5 p.m.
West Bloomfield High and Walled Lake Central open the district. North Farmington drew a bye and waits for the winner in the final.

The champion moves on to the Walled Lake Central regional.

Bloomfield Hills High — 5:30 p.m.
The host team meets Birmingham Groves on one side of the bracket, while Birmingham Seaholm and Birmingham Brother Rice make up the other semifinal.

The winner is in the Walled Lake Central regional.

Royal Oak High
Berkley High, Royal Oak, Southfield High and Warren Mott make up this district tournament. The draw was not available at press time.

The champion heads to the Walled Lake Central regional.

Grosse Pointe South
South welcomes Grosse Pointe North, Eastpointe East Detroit and St. Clair Shores Lakeview. The district draw was not available at press time.

The winner moves on to the Fraser High regional.

Warren Cousino — 5 p.m.
Roseville High and Cousino make up one side of the bracket. Warren De La Salle and Fraser High are in the other semifinal.

The winner moves on to the Fraser regional.

Sterling Heights High — 5 p.m.
Sterling Heights takes on Utica Ford II in one semifinal, with Clinton Township Chippewa Valley and Sterling Heights Stevenson battling in the other semifinal.

The champion goes to the Fraser regional.

Anchor Bay High — 5:30 p.m.
This district features two ranked squads on opposite sides of the bracket.

Anchor Bay (No. 7) meets Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse in one semifinal. Macomb Dakota (No. 9) takes on Macomb L’Anse Creuse North in the other match.

Anchor Bay beat Dakota 44-21 earlier in the year.

The champion is in the Fraser regional.

Division 2 on Feb. 10
Ortonville Brandon — 5 p.m.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and the host team meet in a semifinal, with Auburn Hills Avondale and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep on the other side of the bracket.

The winner heads to the Goodrich High regional.

Warren Lincoln — 5 p.m.
In one semifinal, St. Clair Shores Lake Shore takes on Center Line High. Lincoln and Warren Woods Tower are on the other side of the draw. The winner moves on to the Tower regional.

Farmington High — 5:30 p.m.
Redford Thurston and Farmington do battle in a semifinal, with their rivals Farmington Hills Harrison and Redford Union meeting in the other semifinal.

The champion is in the Warren Woods Tower regional.

Melvindale High — 5:30 p.m.
Madison Heights Madison and Madison Heights Bishop Foley have combined to make the Foley-Madison wrestling team.

The new squad starts its postseason with Detroit Mumford in a semifinal.

The winner takes on either Melvindale or Detroit Cesar Chavez in the final.

The champion heads to the Warren Woods Tower regional.

Madison Heights Lamphere — 5:30 p.m.
Lamphere has been dominant at the district level, winning four straight titles and 11 of the last 13 years.

The Rams get started with Hazel Park High in a semifinal. The other side of the bracket features Ferndale High and Warren Fitzgerald.

The winner moves on to the Warren Woods Tower regional.

Division 3 on Feb. 11
Algonac High

Macomb Lutheran North, Richmond High (No. 4), New Haven High and Algonac make up the tournament.

The draw was not available at press time. The champion is in the Richmond regional.

Clawson High
Clawson plays host to Harper Woods High and Warren Michigan Collegiate.

The draw was not available at press time. The winner is in the Richmond regional.


Division 4 on Feb. 10
Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest — 5:30 p.m.

There are only two teams in this district, as Northwest and Pontiac Academy for Excellence battle for the district title. The winner moves on to the Laingsburg High regional.
