METRO DETROIT — Even with the overcast sky hanging over The Orchards Golf Club Oct. 11, the Rochester Hills Stoney Creek girls golf team was able to shine through.

The Cougars won their second straight Division 1 regional championship by shooting a team-total 357. The Cougars shot 354 in 2017.

“Team played fantastic,” senior Domitille Chambon said. “We knew when we came in that all we had to do was get top three to move on to states, so that was the goal. We came in, had a little bit of a rough start and then picked it back up. Now we’re regional champs.”

Chambon was tied for the lowest score of the afternoon with Utica Eisenhower’s Ariel Chang. Both girls shot a 77.

Closing out the field for the Cougars was junior Sophia Ubaydi with an 88, senior Hailey Kelley with a 99, sophomore Rebekah Drake with a 93 and sophomore Lucile Chambon with a 100.

Each team can send out up to five golfers, with the four lowest scores counting toward the team total. The top three teams qualify for the state finals, along with the top three individuals on nonqualifying teams.

Eisenhower finished second, shooting a 385. Macomb Dakota, which qualified for its first state tournament, took third with a 389. Rochester High and Romeo High finished tied for fourth, with both teams shooting a 418.

“We knew we were probably on the outside looking in,” Rochester coach Jeff Haney said. “I thought we gave it our best shot. We had one girl shoot her personal best today. The good news is we had three girls today who have never played in a regional, so I’m hoping next year we’re one of these teams (to advance). That’s our goal.”

Troy Athens (460), Utica Ford II (486) and Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (499) rounded out the top eight.

Some programs had individual golfers participating as well, including Utica High senior Sienna Schultz. She shot an 88 to qualify as an individual. The other two individual qualifiers were Rochester junior Savannah Hague with an 80 and Romeo senior Karen Brown with a 90.

“Savannah’s great,” Haney said. “We have a great relationship, and it’s very cool to me to get to go spend the weekend with her and her dad at the state finals next week. When Savannah’s playing like she can play, she’s just as good as anybody.”

The state finals take place Oct. 19-20.  D-1 will be playing at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek; D-2 and D-3 will be at Forest Akers West and Forest Akers East, respectively, on the campus of Michigan State University; and D-4 will compete at The Meadows on the campus of Grand Valley State University.
