ORCHARD LAKE — When Dan Petry found out Orchard Lake St. Mary’s was naming its baseball field after him, he was blown away.

The assistant baseball coach didn’t have the words to describe his emotions, but he was extremely thankful and honored by the dedication.

“It’s just so humbling. The school has been just so good to my family — from my boys, my wife, me. It’s meant so much in our lives that for them to do this is just beyond words. It’s just so humbling, and I’m just completely honored by it,” said Petry, who was a member of the 1984 Detroit Tigers World Series team.

Petry’s son, Matt Petry, is the head coach at St. Mary’s. He said naming the field after his dad was a dedication to his contributions to the baseball community.

“My dad’s been heavily involved in the youth baseball community for the last 25 years, spanning back to coaching myself and my brother growing up,” Matt Petry said. “It’s really just honoring him not only for his contributions to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, but youth baseball in southeast Michigan as a whole over the past 25 years.”

The dedication was scheduled to take place Oct. 21, after press time. Outside of being honored, Dan Petry was emotional about the amount of support that he has received from his family and the community.

However, there was one person planning to make the ceremony who stands out — his mother, Aleene, who lives in California.

“I never thought she’d come back to Michigan again, and she’s coming out. That’s pretty special,” Dan Petry said. “I was, I think, taking everything in stride so far, but when I heard about that, now some of the emotions are starting to come out.”

Dan Petry has been helping out the Eaglets baseball team for the last nine years. Matt Petry said his wisdom and his view of the game have been a huge help to the program over the years.

For Dan Petry, the main focus for him is to help the kids in any way possible. If Matt Petry or any of the players have questions, he is more than willing to step in and provide some advice.

“I’m there, and if (Matt) asks me a question, I’ll tell him,” Dan Petry said. “I’m there just to help him run a good practice and help him through the game should he need anything. I get a big thrill out of working with such fine young men that Orchard Lake St. Mary’s produces.”
