ST. CLAIR SHORES — Forward Ben Davidson led all scorers with 18 points as the St. Clair High boys basketball team earned a 58-44 Jan. 30 road win over St. Clair Shores Lake Shore. The win keeps St. Clair one game ahead of Warren Woods Tower in the race for the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division title.

The Saints (10-4, 7-1 MAC Gold) take on Tower at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 at home in a game that will likely determine the division champ.

“That’s the game of the year for us. It’s (going to) be a crazy atmosphere,” Davidson said. “We’ll be ready.”

A big second half propelled St. Clair to the win over Lake Shore. The Saints outscored the Shorians 35-21 after halftime; the teams were tied 23-23 at the half.

"They executed what they wanted to execute, and we weren't able to do that," Lake Shore coach Derrick Walton Sr. said. "We have a talented team. We just have to play harder."

An 8-0 run out of the locker room put St. Clair up 31-23 in the third. Lake Shore pulled to within six at 33-27, but couldn’t get over the jump. The Saints led by as much as 15 points in the fourth.

“We just played tougher defense in the second half. We put more pressure on their guards,” Davidson said. “That’s a good team. It was anybody’s game at halftime, and we were able to get the win.”

St. Clair wing Mario Mattson chipped in with 17 points.

Forward Caleb Bates led Lake Shore with 17.

Lake Shore’s next game is against Port Huron Northern at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 at home.
