SOUTHFIELD — In front of its home crowd, Southfield High wrestling won a Division 2 team district championship Feb. 12.

The Blue Jays beat Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 40-35 in the final.

Early on it was all St. Mary’s, as the Eaglets won the first three matches to take an 11-0 lead.

“We had the momentum to start things off, and there were just a couple of matches that didn’t go our way,” St. Mary’s coach Chris Brecht said.

Southfield’s Anthony Springer started to turn things around for his squad, getting a pin at 189 pounds.

“I didn’t feel any pressure. I just knew that I had to go out there and do my job, get the work done,” Springer said.

Pins would prove to be the difference with each squad winning seven matches, but it was the Blue Jays with five pins compared to the Eaglets’ three.

Southfield’s Cory Knight clinched the victory with his pin at 140 pounds to make it 40-29.

In the semifinals, St. Mary’s beat Farmington High 54-27 and Southfield dispatched Farmington Hills Harrison 66-12.

Up next, the Blue Jays head to a regional semifinal Feb. 18 at Warren Lincoln.
