DETROIT — The start of summer 2020 in Detroit just got much more interesting with the announcement that the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the Detroit Grand Prix will take place the same weekend.

After hosting the first ever PGA Tour event in Detroit, the Detroit Golf Club will again host the Rocket Mortgage Classic, set for May 26-31, 2020. The Detroit Grand Prix runs May 29-31 on Belle Isle.

“What a great way to start an exciting 2020 summer season in Detroit — with two world-class sporting events in one awesome weekend,” Bud Denker, chairman of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear, said in a statement. “Both of these events bring a tremendous benefit to our city and to southeast Michigan, from the annual economic boost to our region, to showing the world all that Detroit has to offer through the highest levels of both motorsports and golf competition.”

“With the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the Detroit Grand Prix being held during the same week, we will have another excellent opportunity to shine a bright, international spotlight on the city of Detroit. Viewers will have a front-row seat to some of the best excitement and energy Detroit has to offer,” Rocket Mortgage Classic Executive Director Jason Langwell said in a prepared statement.

Nate Lashley took the top spot at this year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, shooting 25-under par over four days. Next year, the event will again look to attract more of the top names in golf.

This year, the tournament had multiple big names, including Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Gary Woodland and Rickie Fowler.

The 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic will be held two weeks after the PGA Championship and three weeks before the U.S. Open.

“We couldn’t be more excited about the dates the PGA Tour has provided us, and we are looking forward to holding another phenomenal tournament in 2020,” Langwell said. “Not only will the Rocket Mortgage Classic be a great way to kick off summer in Detroit immediately after the Memorial Day holiday, but we will once again have our tournament fall between two major championships — the PGA Championship and U.S. Open. We are confident that the Rocket Mortgage Classic will be an attractive option for many of the world’s top players, and allow us to recruit another exceptional field, just as we did for our inaugural tournament.”
