Number of local girls tennis teams advance to state finals

The 2018 MHSAA girls tennis Division 1-4 state finals are set for June 1-2 at various sites and several standout players from programs inside the C & G Sports coverage area will vie for state titles after advancing through regionals.

The top two teams at each regional advance to the finals, while individuals not apart of qualifying teams move on by either winning a No. 1 singles flight or finishing as runner-up.

Division 1 schools head to the Greater Midland Tennis Center, D-2 programs are at Kalamazoo College, D-3 will be competing in Holland, and D-4 is at Novi High.

Here is a breakdown of local qualifying teams and individuals by division.

Division 1

Farmington Hills Mercy, Grosse Pointe South, Troy High, Utica Eisenhower, Bloomfield Hills High and Rochester Adams will make the trip to Midland to play for a state title.

Individually, Rochester High’s Sara Ang advanced.

Division 2

Birmingham Seaholm, Bloomfield Hills Marian, Birmingham Groves and Berkley High will make travel to Kalamazoo to play for a state title.

Individually, Royal Oak High’s Olivia Weiss advanced.

Marian won its third D-2 title in 2016, while Seaholm captured a fourth D-2 title in 2015.

Division 3

Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood, Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep move on to the D-3 finals in Holly.

Country Day will play for its third straight state championship.

Division 4

The Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart and Royal Oak Shrine have battled their way to the D-4 finals.

Individually, Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett’s Melanie Zampardo moves on to the finals.

Sacred Heart won D-4 titles in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016.
