NOVI — Novi High volleyball is one step closer to returning to the Class A state final.

The Wildcats beat Farmington Hills Mercy 25-15, 25-16, 25-22 for a regional championship Nov. 12 on their home floor.

Last season, Novi lost to Romeo High in five games in the state final.

“It’s in the very back of our mind,” Novi coach Jennifer Cotrill admitted. “It’s nice to get out of this regional.”

The Wildcats dominated the first two games thanks to a strong showing at the net and with the serve.

Cotrill felt experience also played a factor.

“(Mercy) has a pretty young team. I thought we started Game 1 serving well and that got them out of their system,” she said.

Mercy coach Loretta Vogel agreed.

“They overpowered us, tonight they did. We did everything we could. They served really strong, and we couldn’t stay with them in serve-receive,” she said.

In Game 3, the Marlins took an early 6-1 lead. Novi battled back to take its first lead 13-12, which it didn’t relinquish.

“Our girls did everything we wanted, no regrets,” Vogel said.

The Marlins finish 56-14-1.

Novi (51-2) takes on Grosse Pointe North in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at West Bloomfield High.
