GROSSE POINTE WOODS — After winning Class A district and regional championships, the season has come to a close for Grosse Pointe North’s volleyball team, as No. 1-ranked Novi High defeated the Norsemen 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs Nov. 17 at West Bloomfield High.

Novi went on to win a state championship.

“Novi’s a good team,” North coach Chelsea Brozo said following the match. “They are scrappy, they have good hitters, they strategically know where to serve the ball. That hurt us tonight.”

Brozo was asked about the effort she got from her team during the season.

“I couldn’t have asked for more effort,” she said. “They gave it their all. Because they worked so hard and because of the things that we did each day, it came out and showed through the district and regional. They deserve it. They deserve where they are.”

Seniors Ryann Dunkeson, Erin Armbruster, Lucy Dodge and Lauren Lesha have wrapped up their careers at North.

“They held the team,” Brozo said. “They were good leaders. They will be missed. They taught the younger girls that you need to be a captain; you need to be 100 percent devoted to this team. They were teammates this year.”

Armbruster attempted to put North’s season into perspective.

“This season was so much fun,” she said. “We really didn’t think we would make it this far. In districts, we just turned our engines on. We came together, worked as a unit. It was really fun, a really great season.”

While Brozo would have preferred to make the trip to Battle Creek to compete in the semifinals, from her perspective, the experience the Norsemen gained could benefit the program next season.

“It should be a good building experience,” she said. “These girls have given 110 percent. They’ve been dedicated to this team. We still have not had a bad practice. Attitudes were awesome. I think next year we should be in the same spot. We can make it this far, if not farther. It’s a learning experience. We have a young team. I have four graduating seniors, and the younger girls will learn from this.”

Against Novi, North junior Stephanie Roy had 18 digs and 30 serve-reception points, with Dodge contributing 20 assists and two service aces.

Katie Snow and Armbruster each had six kills for North, with teammates Mackenzie Simon and Abby Kanakry coming away with five.
