GROSSE POINTE WOODS — Grosse Pointe North's girls varsity softball team picked up a big Macomb Area Conference White Division win against Utica Ford II in a low-scoring affair at North May 24.

Senior Amanda Lanzon's ground ball in the bottom of the seventh inning scored senior Krystin Bartold, as North came away with a 2-1 victory and improved to 4-5 in league play. Ford II was 5-5 after the loss. Utica High and St. Clair Shores Lakeview were tied at the top at 7-4.

North junior Amy Zaranek kept Ford II hitters off-balance throughout the game, racking up 12 strikeouts along the way. Her mix of riseballs, change-ups and fastballs held the Falcons to just three hits.

Zaranek also drove in the first run of the game on a fly ball that hit the fense in left field.

Bartold, Zaranek and sophomore Jacci Sherry each had two hits for North; Bartold scored both runs.

As the battle for the MAC White title continues throughout the week, teams are also gearing up for districts. North drew Roseville High in its opening game at 11:30 a.m. June 4 at Jefferson Middle School in St. Clair Shores.

Zaranek, North's starter for three season, will no doubt have the ball when the state tournament gets under way.

"We won (districts) my freshman year and were finalists my sophomore season, so I know what to expect," said Zaranek, who when asked about her greatest strength said it was remaining "calm under pressure."

"We need to keep our bats going, keep hitting. That's the key."
