WARREN — The wrestling teams from Warren Mott and Warren Woods Tower have become known for having extended stays in the postseason, and those runs have continued this winter.

The Marauders knocked off Troy High 42-39 in a Division 1 district final Feb. 12 at Royal Oak High. Mott accomplished the feat with a relatively inexperienced team.

“Much to my surprise, we pulled it off,” said coach Paul Salyers, whose team bested Troy Athens 39-33 in the district semifinal. “It was a very exciting night.”

The Marauders will face Clarkston High in a D-1 regional semifinal at 5 p.m. Feb. 19 at Rochester Adams. The other side of the bracket includes Utica Ford II and Adams.

The Marauders in the district title bout were up by three points heading into the final two matches. Mott 130-pounder Andre Saffer pinned Troy High’s Evan Zagacki to give the Marauders a nine-point edge, putting the match out of reach.

“You never know what can happen or who will win when two inexperienced wrestlers are matched up,” Salyers said of the pivotal 130-pound match. “Our nerves were on edge. As it turned out, we need not be worried.”

Tower’s run continues
Tower bested Center Line High 84-0 to claim a D-2 district crown Feb. 12. It’s the program’s fifth straight district championship.

The Titans, who hosted the district tournament, bested Harper Woods High 52-27 in a semifinal, while the Panthers beat Eastpointe High 60-6 to get to the district final.

Tower advances to meet Ferndale High in a regional semifinal at 5 p.m. Feb. 19 at a location to be determined. The Titans have appeared in four straight state quarterfinals. Individually, the team had two wrestlers win state titles in 2019.

Other local squads bow out of postseason
In D-1, Roseville High bested Warren Cousino 45-33 Feb. 12 in a district final.

The Patriots knocked off Sterling Heights High 57-21 to get to the final. The host Panthers beat Warren De La Salle 39-36 to advance to the district final.

In D-3, Macomb Lutheran North knocked off Warren Lincoln 24-18 Feb. 12 in a district semifinal. The Mustangs would fall to Algonac High 84-0 in the next round.

Also in D-3, Madison Heights Bishop Foley got past Warren Michigan Collegiate 43-33 in a Feb. 12 district semifinal. The Ventures went on to beat Clawson High 48-29 to win a district title.

In D-2, Madison Heights Lamphere beat Warren Fitzgerald 80-0 Feb. 13 for a district championship. Lamphere beat Auburn Hills Avondale, and Fitzgerald downed Hazel Park to get to the district final.

Individual districts took place after press time.
