MADISON HEIGHTS — Host Madison Heights Lamphere wrestling secured its sixth consecutive Division 2 district championship with a 39-31 victory against Ferndale High Feb. 8 at home.

The Rams have now won a district title in 13 of the last 15 years.

With its victory, Lamphere advances to a regional Feb. 15 at Warren Woods Tower.

With Lamphere leading 35-31 heading into the final match, 145-pounder Devin Hunt sealed the district title for his team with a 13-5 victory.

At one point, Ferndale led the Rams 25-4.

Making a comeback to extend the program’s streak of district championships is no small thing to Lamphere coach Russ McKenzie.

“This is a special one,” he said. “One, we have some kids out of our lineup — we have kids sick. The other kids battled to overcome it. The second thing that makes it special, Ferndale, they were a very good opponent tonight. Their program has really come (a) long way. … That was a great high school wrestling meet.”

Ferndale coach John Bassier said there were a couple pivotal matches during the meet.

“I thought our kids wrestled as hard as they could for their ability levels and all of that," he said. "I’m proud of the kids.”

Lamphere got pins from Sebastian McAllister (103 pounds), Justin Selimi (119) and Matt Tomsett (130).

Alex Szewczul (152), Don Glenn (125) and TJ Card (140) were also victorious in their matches for Lamphere.

Mike Yousif won by void in the 112-pound weight class to pick up more points for the Rams.

Zoser Little (160), Ronnell McGghee (171), Donovan Pitts-Reed (189), Kobe Falls (285) and Matt Ballard (135) all earned victories for Ferndale.

Lamphere beat Hazel Park High 46-19 in a semifinal match, with Ferndale advancing to the final via a 69-10 win against Warren Fitzgerald.
