Sterling Heights Stevenson football coach Justin Newcomb accepts a Division 1 district championship trophy following the team's thrilling 38-35 Nov. 1 win over Macomb Dakota. The Titans meet Detroit Cass Tech in a Nov. 15 regional final.

Macomb Mashups: Stevenson football set to battle Cass Tech in regional final

They both snuck into the party, but the football teams from Sterling Heights Stevenson and Detroit Cass Tech have proven they belong.

The Titans (7-4) and Technicians (7-4) meet in a Division 1 regional final set for 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at Stevenson. Both teams entered the playoffs at 5-4.

There's not much history between the programs. Stevenson and Cass Tech have only faced off once — a 38-12 Titans win in the first round of the 1997 state playoffs.

Stevenson is in the regional round for the first time since 1999, downing Macomb Dakota 38-35 in comeback fashion Nov. 8 to win a district title. This season marks the Titans' first playoff appearance since 2015. The team rebounded from a 2-3 start to make the playoffs.

Cass Tech is a playoff staple. The Technicians have been in the postseason every year since 2008, winning state championships in 2011, 2012 and 2016. Cass Tech had a rough start to the season, too, getting off to 0-2 and 1-3 starts before rallying to earn a postseason berth.

Stevenson entering the regional final puts up 21.5 points per game, while allowing 23.9 points per contest. The team's offense has seen a boost in the playoffs, as the Titans have averaged 36 points per game and allow 31.

The Technicians enter the game averaging 26.7 points per contest — 35 points in two playoff games. Cass Tech in the regular season allowed 19.6 points per game and has given up 22.5 points per game so far in the playoffs.

Cass Tech has fared well against teams from the Macomb Area Conference. The Technicians are 15-0 against MAC teams dating back to 2008. The team is 15-2 vs. the MAC overall, with a 1992 loss to Utica Eisenhower to go along with the 1997 setback against Stevenson.

The winner meets either Davison High or Utica Eisenhower in a state semifinal set for Nov. 23 at a time and site to be determined.
