Macomb Area Conference honors standout boys basketball players

MACOMB COUNTY — Another boys basketball season is in the books, and coaches in the Macomb Area Conference have honored the top players in their respective divisions.

At the close of each season, coaches in the six MAC leagues convene to name Most Valuable Player, Coach of the Year, All-League honorees and give out a Sportsmanship Award.

Following is a division-by-division breakdown of this season’s honorees.


MAC Red
Sterling Heights Stevenson swept the individual awards, with senior Brandon Michrina earning league MVP and Mark LaCombe taking Coach of the Year honors. Macomb L’Anse Creuse North received the Sportsmanship Award.

All-League honorees were Michrina and seniors Ayhem Hanna and Jerry Wilson, Stevenson; seniors Darien Banks and John Ukomadu, and junior Martell Turner, Roseville High; senior Mark Tocco and junior Ryan Rollins, Macomb Dakota; and senior Joel Knighton and junior Myren Harris, Clinton Township Chippewa Valley.

Stevenson and Roseville both finished at 8-2 in league play to share the MAC Red title. Dakota was next at 7-3, followed by Chippewa Valley (5-5), Utica Eisenhower (2-8) and L’Anse Creuse North (0-10).


MAC White
New Haven High once again earned both MVP (senior Romeo Weems) and Coach of the Year (Tedaro France) honors. Utica Ford II received the Sportsmanship Award.

All-League honors went to Weems and senior Ronald Jeffery, New Haven; seniors De’Jon Gantz and Darius Willis, Warren Mott; senior Ryan Downey and freshman Will Johnson, Grosse Pointe South; senior Joe Ayrault, Grosse Pointe North; seniors Blake McRae and Ryan Heimbaugh, Romeo High; and senior Matt Skiba, Ford.

New Haven went 10-0 to win the division, while Mott (8-2) finished second. Grosse Pointe South, Grosse Pointe North and Romeo all finished at 4-6. Ford went 0-10 in league play.


MAC Blue
St. Clair Shores Lake Shore took home the major awards. Shorians senior Caleb Bates won league MVP honors, and coach Michael Jackson was named Coach of the Year. Warren Fitzgerald received the Sportsmanship Award.

All-League honorees were Bates and senior Melik Miner, Lake Shore; seniors Andrew Salter and Jowan Johnson, Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse; senior Riley Vermander, New Baltimore Anchor Bay; senior Jeremy Kitka and junior Tyler Mack, Warren Cousino; seniors Joan Binishi and Trey Koteles, Utica High; and senior Colton Haberek, Fitzgerald.

Lake Shore finished at 9-1 to win the division. L’Anse Creuse was next at 6-4. Anchor Bay, Cousino and Utica all finished at 5-5 in league play, while Fitzgerald went 0-10.


MAC Gold
Warren Woods Tower senior Lee Veasley and his coach, Nick Evola, earned MAC Gold MVP and Coach of the Year honors, respectively. Tower and Sterling Heights High shared the Sportsmanship Award.

All-League honors went to Veasley and senior Charles Anderson-Louie, Tower; senior Tai Davis, and juniors Tommy McNelis and Mark Tumpkin, Fraser High; senior Codee Harris, St. Clair Shores South Lake; juniors Braiden McGregor and James DeLong, Port Huron Northern; junior Ryan Zimmer, St. Clair High; and senior Seth Ochoa, Sterling Heights.

Tower went 7-3 to top the division. Fraser and South Lake both finished at 6-4, followed by Port Huron Northern (5-5), St. Clair (4-6) and Sterling Heights (2-8).


MAC Silver
Madison Heights Madison senior Austin Brown earned league MVP honors, while his coach, Karl Williams, took home the Coach of the Year award. Madison, Clinton Township Clintondale, Eastpointe High and Port Huron High shared the Sportsmanship Award.

All-League honorees were Brown and senior Cameron Carodine, Madison; senior Richard Washington and junior Darrell Walker, Clintondale; senior Jesse Judkins and junior Davion Holloway, Eastpointe; seniors Jalen Passmore and Dante Hudgins, Warren Lincoln; junior Chris Moran, Marysville High; and sophomore De’Ovion Price, Port Huron.

Madison finished atop the MAC Silver with a 9-1 mark. Clintondale and Eastpointe both finished at 6-4. Lincoln went 5-5, followed by Marysville (3-7) and Port Huron (1-9).


MAC Bronze
Marine City High junior Angelo Patsalis and his coach, Ron Glodich, took home league MVP and Coach of the Year honors, respectively. Clawson High received the Sportsmanship Award.

All-League honorees were Patsalis, senior Jack Kretzschmar and junior John Mistretta, Marine City; seniors TJ Verner and Bryce Blaesing, Clawson; senior Zach Johnson and junior Jaeden Valadez, St. Clair Shores Lakeview; junior Kian Lemons, Madison Heights Lamphere; and senior Jashun Houston, Center Line High.

Marine City won the division with an 8-0 mark. Clawson and Lakeview both finished at 4-4, while Lamphere and Center Line each finished at 2-6.
