ST. CLAIR SHORES — St. Clair Shores resident Bill Alcott has competed in 45 boat races in the last 50 years, but he said it feels new every time he and his crew hit the water.

“I really do,” the 80-year-old said.

Come July 22, Alcott and his crew will board Equation once again for the Bell’s Bayview Mackinac Race.

“Being that these are somewhat my senior years, I couldn’t imagine not having this to look forward to,” he said.

His 16th go of this was last summer, yet in speaking about the annual race to Mackinac Island, Stephen Polk still talks as if he’s a rookie ready for his first voyage.

“It’s something you have to enjoy every year,” Polk boasted last week about the 2017 Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. “Every year is something different, and you always look forward to it.”

The 91st consecutive boat race from Port Huron to Mackinac Island is now in the books, with approximately 247 boats having competed, according to 2015 Bayview Yacht Club Commodore Hanson Bratton.

The Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race took place July 18-20, and although Bratton said there was a storm after the start of the race, he added that “the weather was fantastic,” helping to make for what he referred to as a “fun year.”

This year’s installment of the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m. July 18.

It is the 91st consecutive running of this summer tradition, which includes Boat Night on July 17, as thousands gather to get a glimpse of the racing yachts and wish the racers well, and wraps up between July 19 and 21 on Mackinac Island as the final boats cross the finish line.

More than 250 boats have registered to compete, which could make it the largest race since 2005, according to race chairman Peter Wenzler.

It’s the “good competition” from a “great group of sailors” that has Dennis Meagher returning for the Bayview Mackinac Race for the 23rd year this year.

“It’s about the biggest race the Great Lakes has to offer,” the Roseville resident said.
Meagher and his crew will head out on his boat, Snipe, for this year’s race, sponsored by Bell’s Brewery Inc., on July 23 from Port Huron.

Dave Sandlin said it was the “spirit of competition” that has kept him coming back to the Bayview Mackinac Race for 26 years.

“Sometimes, I wonder why I keep doing it,” the Sterling Heights resident joked. “I definitely like to win races; that’s what I try to do.”

Bonded by the love of the sea, Ray and Winnie Adams of West Bloomfield began sailing 35 years ago.

The veteran sailors have earned the prestigious title of “old goat,” given to sailors who have raced in more than 25 Bayview Mackinac races apiece. At the 50-race mark, “old goats” make the glorious transition to “grand rams.”
