Local wrestlers earn spots in state semifinals

AUBURN HILLS — Wrestling is back in action for the secon day at The Palace of Auburn Hills, and a handful of local grapplers punched their tickets to the state semifinals, set for 7 p.m. March 6.

Here’s a look at all local wrestlers who will take to the mat tonight.

Division 1
At 119 pounds, Brendan Hazelton is in the semifinals after beating Davison’s Deven Perez 7-3. Up next is Demetric Hall of Flint Carman-Ainsworth.

At 125, Walled Lake Central’s Ben Freeman continued his dominance, beating Utica Eisenhower’s Vince Marceau by tech fall. Freeman is the defending 103-pound state champion. He takes on Grand Haven’s Camden Bertucci next.

Walled Lake Central’s Daniel Shear is in the 135-pound semis after beating Dylan Dwyer 9-0. He meets Oxford High’s Collin Campbell next.

West Bloomfield High’s Matt Gudenau kept his perfect season alive at 140. He goes to 47-0 on the season after beating Eisenhower’s Owen Donovan 4-2.

“I’m just worried about myself and my goals,” Gudenau said, adding that he doesn’t feel any extra pressure with the unblemished record. “I feel like I’m wrestling the way I should. It’s just about getting wins. I don’t care how.”

At 152, Clinton Township Chippewa Valley’s Tristen Szajna moved on after an 11-4 decision against Lapeer’s Noah Kinne. Up next is Blake Montrie from Temperance Bedford.

Rochester Adams’ Sam Addy and Grosse Pointe North’s Michael Bowden are both in the semis. Addy pinned Aaron Cummings of Grand Haven to get in and takes on Milik Dawkins of Carmen-Ainsworth next.

Bowden beat White Lake Lakeland’s William Jacobs 17-12 in his quarterfinal match. Next is Novi Detroit Catholic Central’s Myles Amine.

Rochester Hills Stoney Creek’s Andrew Price is in at 171. He beat Tyler Hammack of Monroe 7-1. He takes on Devon Pingel of Lapeer in a semifinal match.

Central’s Alex Sovel is a semifinalist at 189. He beat Zane Gorby of Caledonia 6-2 to earn the spot. He takes on Nick Giese of Catholic Central next.

Macomb Dakota’s Antonio Balabani is in at 215. He won via decision 8-2 against Jake Economou in the quarterfinal. Balabani takes on Brighton High’s Eric Conquest for a shot at the state-title match.

Division 2
Farmington Hills Harrison’s Michael Volyanyuk is a match away from wrestling for the state title at 119. He beat Niles’ Josh Dayhuff 4-2 in his quarterfinal and wrestles Noah Schoenherr of Bay City Western in the semifinal.

At 125, Hazel Park’s Hunter Truba trailed Eaton Rapids’ Austin Eldred 2-0 after the first period in the quarters, but then went on to score four straight points in the final two periods for the win.

“It was just willpower and the want to win,” Truba said after the victory. “That’s all you can do.”

Up next for Truba is Byron Center’s Jacob Busing in the semifinal.

At 130, Warren Lincoln’s Garret Kaercher beat Flushing’s Connor Boike by major decision to head to the semifinals where he’ll take on Parma Western’s Nick Phelps.

Lincoln’s Khannor Kaercher is moving on at 152. He beat Eaton Rapids’ Blaine Milheim 5-2 in his quarterfinal. Clio’s Chase Smith awaits in the semifinal.

At 171, Lincoln’s Jelani Embree stayed undefeated (45-0), beating Goodrich’s John Penfold 9-1 in his quarterfinal. Up next is St. John’s Logan Massa, who is also undefeated at 37-0.
