Local squads begin playoff runs

The postseason is in full gear for Hazel Park High, Madison Heights Lamphere, Madison Heights Madison and Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
Here’s a look at when and where each team competed.

Girls Soccer
Hazel Park opened its Division 2 postseason with a 4-1 victory June 1 against Warren Fitzgerald.

The Vikings controlled the quarterfinal, which was played at Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day, taking a 1-0 lead 20 seconds into the game on a shot from Kara Martin.

“It was the fastest goal I had ever seen,” Hazel Park coach Denis Dixon said. “Then it took us the rest of the game to put three more in. We were peppering their goalie.”

Martin finished the contest with two scores, while teammates Kendra Nash and Elizabeth Sterner each had one.      

The Vikings, 14-6-1 overall, went on to play Country Day June 2, after press time.

Also in D-2, Lamphere’s run ended in a district quarterfinal May 31 at Auburn Hills Avondale. The Rams fell 1-0 to end the season at 7-11-1 overall.

In D-4, Bishop Foley defeated Southfield Christian 9-1 May 31 at Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett. The Ventures then met the host team in a semifinal after press time.

The other side of the bracket featured Madison, Dearborn Riverside, Royal Oak Shrine and Detroit Cristo Rey, all of which played after press time.

The district champion moved on to play at Foley in a regional semifinal, also played after press time. The regional championship is at 7 p.m. June 9.

Softball
In D-2, Hazel Park opened its district with a 13-7 victory against Ferndale High May 31 at Center Line High. The Vikings then played Warren Fitzgerald after press time in the semifinal. The other side of the bracket featured the host team and Warren Lincoln.

The district champion moves on to the June 11 Dearborn Divine Child regional.

Also in D-2, Lamphere took on Macomb Lutheran North in its district semifinal after press time. Country Day and Clawson High met on the other side of the bracket.

The district winner goes to the June 11 regional at Country Day.

Madison and Bishop Foley were in the same D-3 district at Foley. Madison opened play with a 23-15 victory against Harper Woods High May 31.

Madison then took on Clinton Township Clintondale, while Foley played Detroit Pershing after press time.

The winner of the district stays at Foley for the regional tournament June 11.

Baseball
Hazel Park fell to Ferndale 13-9 May 31 in its D-2 district opener. The Vikings ended the season at 6-14 overall.

Staying in D-2, Lamphere played Lutheran North after press time. Country Day and Clawson met in the other semifinal. The district winner heads to Country Day June 11 for a regional matchup.

In D-3, Madison’s season came to a close with a 6-4 loss May 31 in its district opener at Foley. The Eagles finished at 11-11 overall.

Foley took on Pershing in the semifinal after press time. The winner played either Harper Woods or Clintondale in the district final, with the champion staying at Foley June 11 for the regional round.
