PONTIAC — Orchard Lake St. Mary’s golf team captured the Oakland County Division 2 tournament after firing a team-total 292 May 6 at The Links of Crystal Lake in Pontiac.

“I know we have four to five really good players, and we were waiting for them to all play well on the same day. Today was the day,” St. Mary’s coach Tom Brecht said.

St. Mary’s sophomore Chris Williams led the way with a 70, taking medalist honors.

“I played all-around solid. I hit the ball straight. This gives me a lot of confidence. It’s probably my best round,” Williams said. “Making it into D-1 is great. This is a big hop for us and gives us a lot of confidence too.

Clarkston Everett shot 311 for second place and Waterford Kettering finished at 320. Both teams will join the Division 1 tournament field next year.

Walled Lake Northern also shot 320, but finished fourth on a tiebreaker. The rest of the field included West Bloomfield High (324), Madison Heights Lamphere (332), Milford High (333), Ortonville Brandon (335), Royal Oak High (339), South Lyon East (342), Birmingham Groves (342), Walled Lake Western (348), Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes (355), Royal Oak Shrine (362), Waterford Mott (367), Auburn Hills Oakland Christian (385), Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest (398), Southfield Christian (422), Clawson High (473) and Hazel Park High (492).

One of the rewards for winning the D-2 tourney is getting an invite to play in the county's Division 1 tournament, which gets underway May 18 at Pontiac Country Club.

Individually, the top four golfers not on the championship team also earned a same-season bid to the D-1 tournament. They are Clarkston Everett’s Tyler Rozwadowski (71), Ortonville Brandon’s Brett Hobson (73), Milford High’s Christian Gulich (75) and Walled Lake Northern’s Tyler Fracassi (75).
