When the final whistle blew, only one local boys soccer squad made it through to the district final.

In Division 1, Walled Lake Northern defeated Walled Lake Central 3-0 in their Oct. 17 opener. The Knights defeated Novi Detroit Catholic Central — which outlasted Walled Lake Western 3-0 in their district opener — in an Oct. 20 semifinal to advance to the Oct. 22 final against Farmington Hills North Farmington, played after press time.

In another D-1 district, West Bloomfield High saw its season close in a 3-2 shootout loss to Waterford Mott.

The Lakers, who scored two goals in the first half, couldn’t hold on to the lead.

“We started off really well,” said Lakers coach Jason Clark the day after the elimination game. “We got the first goal, and then we added a second goal with less than a minute left in the first half.

“We moved the ball well. We went up early, which was our goal,” Clark continued. “I don’t think I’ve seen the guys work as hard all season as they did last night. They really picked it up and came out with fire.”

Despite bowing out earlier than anticipated, Clark said West Bloomfield (13-6-3) has made strides and has much to look forward to.

“As a new coach coming in, you want to start on a good foot. It’s been a turnaround,” Clark said. “For the boys, they saw how close they’ve come in the league and in districts. It gave them a bitter taste ending the way they did, but motivation for next year. They got big-time game experience and have a lot to look forward to.”

In D-4, the West Bloomfield Frankel Jewish Academy beat Royal Oak Shrine 3-1 in their Oct. 17 district opener and then fell to Southfield Christian 4-1 in an Oct. 18 semifinal.

In D-2, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, which received a first-round bye, ended its season in a 5-0 loss to host Bloomfield Hills Lahser in an Oct. 20 semifinal.
