HARPER WOODS — Since 1947, the Little League World Series has been a summer staple for anyone who grew up playing and loves the game of baseball.

Locals who are fans of Little League baseball can be a part of the 2015 tournament, as the 2015 Little League International State Championship is taking place in our backyard this week.

Harper Woods Little League, 20221 Beaconsfield St., for the second straight year is hosting LLWS games. The tournament, featuring 16 teams from across the state, began July 25 at Johnston Park and culminates with a championship game slated for noon July 30. The winner advances to the regional championship, set for Aug. 9-15 in Indianapolis. The regional winner will vie for a world championship in the 2015 Little League World Series, beginning Aug. 20 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Arthur “Pinky” Deras, a Hamtramck native and Little League World Series legend who led Hamtramck to the 1959 LLWS championship, threw out a ceremonial first pitch July 25.

Eight teams were eliminated from the tournament after July 27 games. Four games will be played beginning at 10 a.m. July 28, when four more teams will be eliminated. Semifinals are set for 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. July 29, with the championship game slated for noon July 30.

For spectators, a  concession stand is available. The menu features baseball concession staples such as hot dogs, pizza, burgers, candy, ice cream and soft pretzels.
