The St. Clair Shores Lakeview girls basketball team beat Macomb L'Anse Creuse North 52-51 Feb. 22 to win the Macomb Area Conference Blue-Gold tournament title.

WARREN – St. Clair Shores Lakeview junior forward Ariana Wlodeck admits she played a bit lackadaisical in the team’s Feb. 22 matchup with Macomb L’Anse Creuse North in the 2020 Macomb Area Conference Blue-Gold tournament final.

“I was moving a bit slow in the first half and coach (Joe Charrette) told me to pick it up,” said Wlodeck, who went scoreless in the half as the Huskies fell behind 27-19.

The junior post player heeded her coach’s call. Wlodeck scored all 12 of her points in the second half and hit a layup with 11.5 seconds left to give Lakeview a 52-51 lead. The shot proved to be the game winner.

The Huskies (16-3) closed on a 6-0 run over the final 2:07 of the game to win their third MAC tourney title in four years.

“This feels really good,” Wlodeck said. “(L’Anse Creuse North) is a team some people thought we weren’t supposed to beat. It feels good to prove people wrong.”

Wlodeck’s game-winning score came on a play drawn up for Lakeview junior guard Kayla Austin. Austin on the play would drive to the basket for a shot, but the Crusaders defense collapsed, allowing the junior guard to find Wlodeck for the game-clinching bucket.

The win is the Huskies first in three tries this season over the Crusaders (14-4).

“They got us twice earlier this season. This is a really good win,” Charrette said.

Lakeview led for only 26 seconds in the game. L’Anse Creuse North opened the contest with a 10-2 run and led by as much as 10 in the first half. The Huskies cut the Crusaders lead to one twice in the third quarter, including on a buzzer-beater layup by senior wing Taedom Stein to make it 41-40 L’Anse Creuse North after three quarters.

The Crusaders, which won the MAC Blue regular season title, went up 51-46 with 2:07 left in regulation on a layup by junior forward Kayanna Carlos. L’Anse Creuse North sophomore Brooke Daniels, who led all players with 32 points, found Carlos wide open under the basket for the score.

The Crusaders following the score went to a box and one defensive set, looking to keep the ball away from Lakeview junior wing Tricia Sankiewicz, who nailed all four of the Huskies 3-pointers in the game on her way to a team-high 15 points. That paved the way for Wlodeck to score Lakeview’s last six points.

“(Wlodeck) just played really hard in that second half,” Charrette said. “We’ve dealt with some adversity this season. (Senior 6-foot-6 center Joslyn Brennan) has been out with a knee injury and we’ve gone 14-1. This team has a lot of fight in it.”

L’Anse Creuse North coach Bob Johnston said Lakeview simply made more plays down the stretch. Johnston admitted his team could have used more help for Daniels.

“We’ve got a couple of non-league games left, so we want to finish the (regular season) strong,” Johnston said. “Then we host a district that’s probably the toughest in Division 1, so that’ll be a challenge.”

Lakeview’s next game is against Oxford High at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 on the road.

L’Anse Creuse North’s next tip is with Romeo High at 7 p.m. Feb. 24.
