Lakeview wrestling wins district title

ST. CLAIR SHORES — The St. Clair Shores Lakeview wrestling team downed Grosse Pointe North 42-33 Feb. 11 in a Division 1 district final to win its first district title since 2005.

The Huskies (22-11) advanced to take on Fraser High (29-6) in a D-1 regional semifinal at 5 p.m. Feb. 17 at Fraser. Fraser beat Roseville High 42-27 in a D-1 district final Feb. 11 to advance.

To get to the district final, Lakeview bested host Grosse Pointe South 45-35. Grosse Pointe North beat Eastpointe East Detroit 68-9 to get to the district final.

The St. Clair Shores Lake Shore wrestling team saw its season end in a 68-9 loss to Warren Woods Tower in a D-2 district final Feb. 10 at Warren Lincoln.

To get to the district final, Lake Shore beat Center Line High 60-12 and Tower downed Lincoln 55-21. Lake Shore ended the season at 12-15.

Lake Shore coach Sam Leto said he’s proud of how his team fought.

“We have a young team. We just wanted to come in here and put up a fight and see what happens,” Leto said. “Hats off to Tower. They’re a tough team. I thought we hung in there pretty well against them.”
