EASTPOINTE — It’s something that has been discussed since Tom Pfiefer returned to coach the St. Clair Shores Lakeview volleyball team in 2014 — winning a district championship.

The squad has advanced a match closer each year, culminating with the Huskies facing Grosse Pointe North in a Class A district title match Nov. 4. Lakeview fell short of its goal, falling to North 3-0.

The Huskies ended the season at 26-15-3. Lakeview beat St. Clair Shores Lake Shore 3-1 Nov. 2 to get to the championship.

“We did everything we could,” Pfiefer said after the loss. “We battled every possession. We’re outsized at pretty much every position on the front line. It seemed like every time we’d make a run, (Grosse Pointe North) would respond.”

North won 25-13, 25-10 and 25-14.

Lakeview held early leads in games 1 and 2. North led the whole way in game 3. The district title is the second straight for North, which advanced to the state quarterfinals last season.

“These girls know what it’s like to have a lot of success as a team,” North coach Chelsea Brozo said. “We weren’t (going to) let this district title slip away from us.”

Pfiefer said he’s proud of how his team battled in the match.

“We’ve been battling a lot of injuries, and we had a couple players get hurt in (the district final),” Pfiefer said. “To see the girls battle the way they did, it makes me really proud and shows what type of players and people we have on this team.”

Since Pfiefer returned from a stint at Roseville High, the program has been strong, winning Macomb Area Conference Silver Division titles in 2014 and 2015 and taking second in the MAC Gold this fall.

Since 2014, Lakeview is 87-42-8 overall and 27-3 in divisional play.

The Huskies lose four players to graduation — Samantha Cunha, Brooklyn Misko, Isabella Fresch and Rebecca Case. Misko, Fresch and Case served as team captains this season.

Eleven players listed on the roster for the district final are eligible to return next season.

“I’m proud of our seniors and what they accomplished,” Pfiefer said. “It’s unfortunate we couldn’t get them a district title, but they’ve been great players and leaders.

“Our team will find a way to battle back from this.”
