It’s essentially a play-in game when Southfield High travels to Troy Athens at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 in an Oakland Activities Association Division crossover.

The winner notches its sixth victory, guaranteeing a spot in the playoffs. The loser is at the mercy of playoff points, hoping there is a spot left for it in the field.

Southfield has earned a spot four straight years and six of the last seven. The Red Hawks are looking for their first trip since 2011.

Both squads are 5-3 overall and 5-2 in their respective divisions, good for third-place finishes. Athens comes in representing the Red and on a two-game winning streak where its only allowed seven total points in that span.

Southfield represents the White and looks to bounce back from a 50-14 loss to its rival, Oak Park High, in Week 8.  The Blue Jays have won five of their previous six games heading into the contest.

Athens leads the all-time series 3-0, including a 13-12 win in their last meeting in 2011.
