EVERLY HILLS — It took 20 seconds for Hazel Park High girls soccer to take control of the Division 2 quarterfinal June 1 at Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day.

The Vikings beat Warren Fitzgerald 4-1, led by Kara Martin’s score moments after the opening whistle.

“It was the fastest goal I had ever seen,” Hazel Park coach Denis Dixon said. “Then it took us the rest of the game to put three more in. We were peppering their goalie.”

Martin finished with two scores and teammates Kendra Nash and Elizabeth Sterner each had one.

Hazel Park pushed its lead to 3-0 before the Spartans' Randi Fitzgerald scored with 3:26 left in the first half.

Fitzgerald coach Jason MacKay said he was proud of his team’s efforts, noting the first meeting with Hazel Park this season was a 7-1 defeat.

“We’re a very young team, but we started to come together at the end of the season. This was a much closer, competitive match,” he said.

Hazel Park takes on the district host in a semifinal at 5 p.m. June 2.

Dixon knows it’s going to be a challenge, calling Country Day one of the top favorites to win the state title.

“We just have to play our best and see what happens,” he said. “If you’re going to make a run in the playoffs, you have to beat good teams. We have to beat a great team.”

Bloomfield Hills Marian takes on Hamtramck High in the other semifinal, directly following the Hazel Park and Country Day game. The championship is at 7 p.m. June 4.
