GROSSE POINTE — Livonia Churchill won a Class A regional volleyball championship with a 3-1 victory against Grosse Pointe South Nov. 12 at South.

The Chargers face either Ann Arbor Huron or Monroe High in a quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Gibraltar Carlson.

Despite losing the first set 25-13, South came back to take the second 25-18, and were within striking distance in each of the other two sets, losing 25-21 and 25-22.

“It’s disappointing,” said South coach Kevin Nugent. “We had eyes on big things. We didn’t play certain positions very well, and we got beat there. It is what it is. I’m proud of the way we played at times tonight, and it was good evidence of how good we can be. I’m glad they were able to show that. Give the girls credit; they battled the whole way.”

Kayli Johnson was the lone senior on South’s roster.
