WARREN — The Grosse Pointe North volleyball team outlasted Sterling Heights Stevenson 3-2 in a hotly-contested Class A regional final Nov. 12 at Warren Cousino.

The Norsemen (28-11-4) advance to take on Novi High in a quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at West Bloomfield High.

Stevenson ends the season at 43-13.

"They deserve it. I want it for them. They earned it," Grosse Pointe North coach Chelsea Brozo said after the win. "Coming out of the (Macomb Area Conference Red Division) — it's a hard league. We finished third in the league. That's mediocre. Nobody wants to be mediocre. This is their way of proving that they're worthy of being champions."

Stevenson led Game 1 start to finish before winning 25-18. Grosse Pointe North took Game 2 25-21. North took Game 3 by the same four-point margin to go up 2-1 in the match. On its way to the 2-1 advantage, North held the lead for the entirety of Games 2 and 3.

"I said 'Just give it your all. You don't have another chance after this,'" Brozo said she told her team after dropping the first game. "I knew this team had enough heart and enough devotion to come back and win the second game. I knew in my heart they weren't gonna let this slip."

Stevenson fought back to take Game 4 25-21, forcing a fifth and final game. Game 4 saw nine ties. Neither team led by more than five points in the first four games.

The deciding game saw three ties early on — at 1-1, 3-3 and 4-4 — before North went on a run to take a 13-6 lead. Stevenson battled back, cutting North's lead to 13-11 before the Norsemen were able to put it away.

"It came down to which team was going to make the most mistakes," Brozo said. "Fortunately, our serving was on and (Stevenson's) serve/receive wasn't."

North got to the regional final with a 3-1 win over Bloomfield Hills High Nov. 10.

Stevenson, in a regional final for the first time since 2011, beat Troy Athens 3-0 Nov. 10 to get to the final.

"These girls, for as young as they are, they're tremendous," Stevenson coach Paul Drdul said. "They don't get down. They keep fighting and as a coach that's all you can ask for. We thought we had a chance to get here. We did everything we could possibly do. It wasn't our time."
