ROSEVILLE — The Fraser High wrestling team downed Roseville High 42-18 Feb. 9 to claim a fourth Division 1 district title in five years and also avenged an early loss.

The Ramblers advance to face the winner of a Macomb L'Anse Creuse North district in a regional semifinal at 5 p.m. Feb. 15 at home. The other half of the bracket comprises Macomb Dakota and St. Clair Shores Lakeview.

"We lost to Roseville earlier this season, and I told our guys that if we stay off of our backs we'd have a chance to beat them and beat them soundly," Fraser coach Rick Julien said. "We had a lot of guys who took pins in that earlier match come out tonight and wrestle well to keep the scores down."

The Ramblers won the first six bouts of the match to take an early 23-0 lead. Fraser's Troy Martinez (160 pounds) and Chris Hackney recorded pins on the run.

Roseville won the next two bouts, getting six points on a void at 103 pounds before 112-pounder Andrew Kelly won a 7-1 decision to cut the Fraser lead to 23-9.

The team's split the next four matches, which ended with the Ramblers taking a 30-18 lead into the final two bouts. Fraser's Jalen Smith (140 pounds) and Danny Pfeffer (145) scored pins in the final two bouts to seal the win.

"They did what they had to do to win, and we didn't," Panthers coach Justin Petrone said.

"I knew my studs would come out and get pins," Julien said. "It was the other kids who stepped up and made sure we won."

To advance to the district final, Fraser knocked off Warren De La Salle 50-22, while Roseville bested Sterling Heights High 69-10.
