FRASER — The Fraser High wrestling team outlasted Roseville High 42-27 in a grueling match Feb. 11 to claim a Division 1 district championship.

“Everybody wrestled really hard tonight,” Fraser coach Rick Julien said.

The district title is the first for the Ramblers since 2014. Fraser fell by four points to Macomb Dakota last year in a district final.

“That was a great match last year,” Julien said. “It’s helped us this year. We set goals to win our league and a district title and to get to a regional final. It’d be very good for a program like Fraser to get (to the state finals).”

Fraser (29-5) will take on St. Clair Shores Lakeview in a regional semifinal at 5 p.m. Feb. 17 at Fraser High. Fraser adds a district title to its Macomb Area Conference Blue Division championship.

The district final, hosted by Warren Cousino, started out as a back-and-forth affair, with the teams trading pins in the first two matches. Roseville (4-6) went up 12-6 on a pin by heavyweight Marcus Fresch.

Fraser 103-pounder Kyle Helsel scored a pin in the next match to tie the district final at 12. Julien called that bout the turning point in the match.

“When he went out there and got that pin, it sparked the entire team,” Julien said. “He took it up a notch. He’s our only 103-pounder and he has a little trouble making weight.

“(Helsel) is a sophomore, so there’s been a growth spurt there and he’s gained some weight but got down to 103,” Julien said. “I’m so proud of him. I’m proud of the whole team.”

Fraser 112-pounder Nate Hollifield scored a pin to put his team up for good at 18-12. Fraser would take six of the final nine matches to secure the district championship.

A 10-3 decision earned by Fraser’s Marcus Keys in the 160-pound match — the next-to-last of the bout — put it out of reach.

“A lot of these guys have been together four years,” Julien said. “That’s how you build a team.”

To advance to the district final, Fraser knocked off Warren De La Salle 68-9.

Roseville got to the district final with a 51-21 win over Cousino.

“We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs,” Roseville coach Justin Petrone said. “We definitely wanted to win, but I’m proud of the guys who came out and fought.”

Clinton Township Chippewa Valley competed in a Division 1 district tournament Feb. 11 at Sterling Heights High, losing to Sterling Heights Stevenson 34-32 in semifinal competition.

“It was an exciting dual meet,” Chippewa head coach Scott Kolesky said. “We came up short. Stevenson was the better team.”

Stevenson went on to defeat Utica Ford 37-30 in a district championship match.

An individual district tournament took place Feb. 13 at New Baltimore Anchor Bay.

Coming away with first-place finishes at the tournament were Jalen Goudelock of Chippewa, and Nathan Hollifield and Jared Roberts of Fraser. A total of nine other local wrestlers also qualified for regionals by placing in the top four in their respective weight classes.
