BEVERLY HILLS — Ferndale High wrestling took hold of the Oakland Activities Association Blue Division after winning both of their divisional matches Jan. 6 at Birmingham Groves to move to 3-0. Last season, Ferndale finished second in the Blue.

“I’m thrilled. We have an optimistic future with this group if they keep working hard,” coach John Bassier said, noting that he had three starters out of the lineup due to illness. “A couple of kids came through real good. This was a very good night. I came in thinking it’d be nip and tuck all the way.”

In the first match, Ferndale beat North Farmington 45-24. The Eagles then handled Groves 53-18.

“The past two years, we’ve gotten better. My freshman year, we were a team of 12 and pretty much got destroyed,” Ferndale 189-pound junior Kobie Davis said. “I feel that we can win it this year. We just have to keep working hard.”

Also on the night, Groves beat Troy Athens on the ninth tiebreaker, which is the team that scored the most first-round points.

Athens rebounded, beating North Farmington 42-33 in its nightcap.
