Eaton Rapids wrestling bests Warren Lincoln in state quarters

WRESTLING — The Eaton Rapids wrestling team remainged alive in the race for its ninth state championship after beating Warren Lincoln 42-18 in a 2015 Division 2 state quarterfinal Feb. 27 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.

The win puts Eatons Rapids at 40-2. Lincoln ends the season at 21-10. Eaton Rapids will take on either Niles or Tecumseh in a state semifinal set for 11:45 a.m. Feb. 28.

Eaton Rapids led the match from start to finish, jumping out to a 14-0 lead after three matches. Lincoln took the next three matches to cut the Eaton Rapids lead to 14-9. Eaton Rapids won the next five matches to build an insurmountable 36-9 lead. Lincoln won two of the final three matches.

The trip to the state finals was the third straight for Lincoln. In addition to its eight state titles, Eaton Rapids has appeared in six other state title matches.

The team portion of the season is over for Lincoln, which won a Class A state title in 1994, but the squad will send six wrestlers to the individual state finals, set for March 5-7 at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The Abes' state finalists are DeMarco Dixon at 103 pounds, Garrett Kaercher (130), Shawn Lindsey (135), Khannor Kaercher (152), Derrien Perkins (160) and Jelani Embree (171).
