With the winter sports season around the corner, East Detroit’s girls basketball team is looking forward to a bright future.

The Shamrocks have a young team and a new coach.

“We are young, small, fast and extremely aggressive,” coach Krysta Kreyger said. “We have a good balance, and every one is competing and working hard together.”

The team is eager get going and put last year’s winless season out of mind.

“This year, we are focusing on competing at a high level with every opportunity, playing with the mindset ‘refuse to lose’ and ‘exhibit no fear,’” the coach said. “If we achieve these goals, we could be competing for the division title.”

The Shamrocks will once again compete in the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division, which saw New Haven High and Clinton Township Clintondale split the league title last year. East Detroit will also face Marysville High, St. Clair Shores South Lake, Clawson High, Madison Heights Madison and Madison Heights Lamphere in the division.

Calling her team “extremely young,” Kreyger said her squad should be improving throughout the season.

“This year’s team displays hustle, heart and determination to reach our goals,” the coach said. “Being an extremely young squad, we have to improve in every category. The two main things we have to focus on are patience and team chemistry.”

The Shamrocks have a little bit of experience in senior guard Devin Zaydell and junior guard Christina Gandy. Aside from that, Kreyger said, “We are an entirely new squad.”

“We have seven underclassman and three juniors who are all first-year varsity players,” the coach said. “Any of these first-year varsity members have the ability to have a breakout year and be a tremendous impact to our program.”

The Shamrocks were scheduled to open the season at 7 p.m. Nov. 29, after press time, at Sterling Heights High. East Detroit’s home opener is at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 against Warren Mott.
