Three local football players have signed on to take their respective talents to the next level, as Tre Caine, of Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett; and Dillon Webb and Jared Jordan, of Grosse Pointe North, each signed letters of intent to play collegiate football on National Signing Day Feb. 1.

Caine signed with Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, where he expects to play slot receiver, with Webb set to go to Saginaw Valley State University as a defensive end, and Jordan to Siena Heights University in Adrian as a running back.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — After rewriting the record book at Utica Eisenhower, running back Jack Provencher is making plans for the next level, choosing to play at Grand Valley State University in the fall.

“Being officially committed, it’s like a reality check,” Provencher said after signing his letter of intent on Feb. 1. “It is a good feeling, but something that I wasn’t fully prepared for. We had a fantastic season that led to this great opportunity, and I hope to make the most of it.”

ORCHARD LAKE — The Orchard Lake St. Mary’s athletic program regularly considers itself one of the best in the state.

Championship trophies from one season to the next serve as the perfect walking to that talking, so to speak.

So, it came as no surprise on Feb. 1, the 2017 edition of National Signing Day, that the Eaglets had a host of players make their college choices, and athletic careers, official.

On Feb. 10, Royal Oak High senior Brendan Beerer signed on to play football and lacrosse at Concordia University. Beerer will be a part of the Ann Arbor-based school’s inaugural lacrosse season.

Beerer, a running back, was one of the most prolific offensive players for the Ravens on the gridiron. In 2015, he was named an All-State honorable mention and  received All-Association honors in the Oakland Activities Association Blue Division.

FARMINGTON HILLS — North Farmington held its annual National Signing Day celebration Feb. 5.

Surrounded by friends and family, four athletes took their turns signing their college commitment letters, all filmed in the school’s production class to be made into a keepsake DVD.

Mher and Sasoun Tcholakian had imagined this day since they were little kids.

The twins both signed to play football with Ohio Wesleyan University.

UTICA — It would be pretty easy to say that Christmas came early for Utica High senior Jon Goettsch this year.

On Dec. 22, Goettsch was informed that he was accepted to attend Harvard University for academics and to also join the school’s football program.

On Feb. 3, Goettsch officially committed to attend Harvard and play football by signing his National Letter of Intent.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Clinton Township Clintondale senior defensive lineman Josh Eldridge garnered interest from several Big Ten schools — Michigan State University, Indiana University, the University of Illinois and the University of Iowa.

He ultimately decided to sign with Central Michigan University because of the loyalty they showed him.

Farmington Hills Harrison held a National Signing Day ceremony Feb. 3.

In total, four athletes signed to play at the college level.

The signees included: Kristen Nelson (Southern Illinois, basketball), Amber Stephens (Wayne State University, basketball), David Vinsky (Northwood, baseball) and Kim Lindberg (Adrian College, soccer).

Mikel Coleman was also on hand for the event. She's still weighing her multiple options to play volleyball.

ROYAL OAK—Royal Oak High senior Tommy Dokho signed his National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Lehigh University on Feb. 3. 

Lehigh, located in Bethelem, Pennsylvania, is a NCAA Division I school that competes in the Patriot League. 

Dokho said playing Division I soccer was something he's had his eyes on for as long as he can remember. 

"There was no other option," he said.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A group of 11 student-athletes from Utica Eisenhower signed their letters of intent to play sports in college on Feb. 3.

In boys soccer, there were five Eisenhower athletes who committed to playing at the next level. The Campbell twins, Ben and Jacob, highlighted the group.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse softball coach Lisa Downey has seen a lot in her 18 years leading the program.

She’s won league and postseason titles. She’s had players sign to play at the NCAA level in Division 2, Division 3 and the NAIA.

Downey, though, never had a player sign to play with a D-1 program right out of high school.

Until now.
