BERKLEY — Ken DePerro wanted to get away. He sought a mini break from what tends to become a bit routine at this time of year.

So the Berkley High softball coach looked for a tournament that would require his girls to face teams they hadn’t, and probably won’t, soon again face.

He searched near and far before landing on one hosted by Alma High, a school in a small town a few hours away and just south of Mount Pleasant.

“Perfect,” DePerro said last week. “We needed to get out of Oakland County and the schedule we’re used to playing. We needed to have some team time just to bond, and this was a great opportunity for both.”

The Bears will leave for their overnight trip after school May 6. They’re scheduled to play three games starting at 9 a.m. May 7. They will also take part in a tour of the city and Alma College.

“To be honest, I have no clue who we’re playing,” DePerro said with a laugh. “All I know is we have three games, but the experience is something I’m looking forward to for these girls. We have one senior who is going to Alma, actually, but for the majority of our team, this will be the first interaction they have on a college campus.”

Most of all, DePerro was keeping his fingers crossed that the weather would cooperate. At press time, the Bears had played just four games and were 2-2.

“We’re looking forward to it,” DePerro added. “I think it’s going to do a lot for our team moving forward.”
