Win or lose, the first day at the MHSAA individual state finals is something grapplers never forget, but results from day one have a distinct effect on the rest of their tournament.

Wrestlers that won their first match are automatically one win from earning All-State honors, but those that lose their opening bouts must win another three matches in the consolation bracket to earn their spot among the top eight in their weight.

After a successful turnaround season, the Utica Ford II wrestling team has its coaches looking forward to what’s in store for the future.

After going 0-7 in Macomb Area Conference Red Division dual meets in 2009-10, the Falcons refocused their efforts throughout the offseason and saw it pay off with a Division 1 team district title to cap 2010-11.

“It was very important for us to win the district this year with the offseason efforts we put in, and the fact that we had a pretty poor season last year,” coach Scott Scalici said.

Wrestling nearly 60 matches and spending months in sweltering practice rooms, not to mention the rigors of cutting and maintaining weight, becomes worthwhile March 3.

When grapplers take to the mats March 3-5 at The Palace of Auburn Hills for the individual state finals, they have earned their way there through personal and physical sacrifice.

And being counted among the state’s best is one of the reasons for that sacrifice.

Clawson High wrestling coach Keil Jorgensen might have to get used to his team exceeding his expectations.

In its second year under Jorgensen and just three years removed from starting from scratch, the Trojans’ wrestling program took home a Division 3 team district title and finished among the top squads in the state.

“It makes you a top-16 team in the state, so it’s pretty cool,” Jorgensen said Feb. 17 after his team wrapped its dual-meet season with a loss to Dundee High in a regional final Feb. 16.

“After three years of being district champions, then going 0-for in regional semifinal matches, it was a charge we put on the program to get to the next level,” Rice coach J. Scott Moseley said.

ROSEVILLE — The wait wasn’t as long, but the prize tasted even sweeter for the Roseville High wrestling team.

The Panthers won their second straight Division 1 regional title Feb. 16 at home, but adversity throughout the 2010-11 season made the championship feel even better than last year’s, when they broke a three-year regional title drought.

“At one point, we had six people in the lineup.” Roseville junior 130-pounder Kirk Wawrzyniak said. “But we kept recruiting and working harder and harder, and now, here we are.
