DETROIT — As last year’s crop of talented seniors walked off the football field following the second annual Border Classic on June 13 at Wayne State University, there were incoming seniors across the state gearing up for their football camps and final runs in high school football.

After team Michigan beat Team Ohio 24-7, local athletes had some great advice for the incoming seniors who will be filling their shoes — the ones who dream of playing in the All-Star game, at the next level, or just want to make their final season special.

The Border Classic All-Star football series between Michigan and Ohio has come to a close.

Michigan’s All-Star Chair and Game Day Chairman Jim Sparks said he was contacted by Team Ohio following the last game June 13 and told that Ohio Board of Directors voted to no longer participate.

Sparks said that he was disappointed in the decision. In the two games of the series, Team Michigan won both, including the most recent meeting, 24-7, at Wayne State University. Last summer, Team Michigan won 27-14 at University of Findlay.

“Michigan-raised and playing for Michigan, it’s an honor,” he said.

ROYAL OAK — Ray McMann, Royal Oak High’s new head football coach, stood alone underneath the bleachers at the Royal Oak High football field June 11.

He was taking stock of inventory.

McCann took the job in February, and this was just another day, like every one since signing on the dotted line, that he’s committed himself to rebuilding the program.

He knows the recent history well — six total wins since 2008 — and he also knows what the program has been in its strongest days.

DETROIT — On the back of its defensive line, Team Michigan won the second annual Border Classic, topping Team Ohio 24-7 June 13 at Wayne State University.

“The defensive line was special, we knew that when they were selected. They’re so big, so fast and they’re athletic. They dominated the game,” said Terry Hessbrook, Ithaca High and head coach of Team Michigan. “The MVP of the game could have been the D-line. They just got after it.”

Ohio struggled to get anything going offensively, regularly being harassed in the backfield.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — In his NFL.com profile, a scout said of 2010 Clinton Township Clintondale graduate Letterius Walton that he will be “one of those guys who ends up being an NFL player nobody sees coming.”

Walton, a defensive lineman at Central Michigan University, will get the chance to prove the scout right after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers on May 2 during the third day of the 2015 NFL Draft. Walton, who earned first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors in 2014, was selected with pick 199 in the sixth round.

While having to decide which sport to play at the collegiate level may seem like a good problem to have, for Macomb L’Anse Creuse North graduate Tyler Sirut, it left him with a difficult decision to make.

According to Sirut, he was getting looks from Division II and Division III schools to play football, as he was a three-year varsity player for LCN, where he played on the defensive line. And then there was the opportunity he was offered to compete for Oakland University’s NCAA Division I Track & Field program.

Not an easy call to make.

HOWELL — The words “destiny” and “magic” were used on a wet football field at Howell High Nov. 22.

Muskegon Mona Shores had just beat Farmington Hills Harrison 25-24 in a Division 2 semifinal.

BEVERLY HILLS — The win streak is intact, and after a first quarter loaded with fireworks, well, it was never really threatened.

Brother Rice football coach Dave Sofran admitted he was a little concerned with his team’s focus entering Saturday’s afternoon contest at Country Day.

But a 21-point explosion in the opening frame calmed all nerves as the Warriors rolled to a 42-21 victory — their 29th consecutive win.
