Last season’s record: 3-6

League: Macomb Area Conference Silver Division

Returning starters: N/A

First game: 7 p.m. Aug. 29 vs. Dearborn Heights Robichaud

Offensive keys:
New South Lake coach Steve Centers — who is in his third stint leading the team — believes effort will be key for the Cavaliers.

Senior wide receiver Bryce Sammons will be called upon to make big plays on offense.

Despite a 3-6 finish last season, South Lake had a positive point differential. The Cavaliers lost five straight to end the season after a 3-1 start.

Defensive keys:
Centers, leading a football team for the first time since 2012, is looking for strong effort from the South Lake defense. The Cavaliers surrendered 212 points last season, which was the lowest for the team in a season since 2012.

Senior linebacker Tre’bion Wolf and Sammons (defensive back) are expected to anchor the squad.

Coach’s outlook:
“Since I’ve taken over, the players have emotionally and physically changed, and they’ve become a tight group of guys,” Centers said. “I was a kid who, football saved my life. I’ve been trying to instill that in kids. We hope to be better Week 9 than we are Week 1. I couldn’t be more proud of the growth these guys have shown. I feel everything is in place for us to turn things around in the next couple of years.”
