Last season’s record: 4-5

League: Macomb Area Conference White Division

Returning starters: 15

First game: 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse

Offensive keys:
After working as an assistant in the program the past four seasons, coach Pat Dailey is now the head man for the Crusaders.

He said senior leadership would tell the tale this season. Senior quarterback Justin Szumanski will pilot the offense, which averaged just 16.6 points per game last season.

Defensive keys:
Dailey wants to see an improved effort on defense. North gave up 40 points four times last season, including three times in its last four games. North started the season 4-1 before losing its final four contests.

Coach’s outlook:
“Our seniors have done a good job all offseason leading the team,” Dailey said. “We have an extremely difficult schedule. There are no easy games. We’re looking forward to the challenges we’ll face every week.”

at Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse (1-8) — 7 p.m. Aug. 29
The Crusaders lead the series 29-15. L’Anse Creuse hasn’t beaten LCN since 2011, which includes a 31-7 Crusaders win last season.

at Warren Mott (7-3) — 7 p.m. Sept. 6
Mott routed LCN 40-7 last season to run its record in the series to 14-3. The Crusaders are 5-16 in their last 21 games overall.

vs. Grosse Pointe North (1-8) — 7 p.m. Sept. 13
LCN beat Grosse Pointe North 19-14 last season. It was North’s lowest win total since 2001. The Crusaders are still just 3-11 against the Norsemen.

at Utica Ford II (3-6) — 7 p.m. Sept. 20
LCN’s best defensive effort last season came in a 20-3 win over Ford. That marked just the third time the Crusaders held an opponent to three points or less since 2007.

vs. Warren Cousino (2-7) — 7 p.m. Sept. 27
LCN is 6-11 against Cousino, but has won three straight, including 25-7 last year. The Patriots were held to seven points or less four times on their way to a 0-7 start last season.

vs. Utica Eisenhower (6-4) — 7 p.m. Oct. 4
The Crusaders have had minimal success against the Eagles. LCN is 1-9 all-time against Eisenhower, with the win coming in 2014. The Eagles won last year’s matchup 45-14.

at Grosse Pointe South (8-2) — 7 p.m. Oct. 11
LCN last beat South in 2013 and is just 4-27 against the Blue Devils. South won last year’s tussle 40-13 on its way to an 8-0 start.

at Utica High (1-8) — 7 p.m. Oct. 18
Utica’s lone win last year was against LCN. The Crusaders are 6-8 against the Chieftains and have lost four of the last five meetings.

vs. Macomb Dakota (8-3) — 7 p.m. Oct. 25
LCN is 1-14 against Dakota after last year’s 55-0 Cougars win. Dakota has topped 50 points in three straight meetings and four of the last five contests between the 21 Mile schools. The Crusaders lost four straight to end the season in 2018 after a 4-1 start.
