Seventy-nine minutes of flawless execution on the defensive side for Stoney Creek was nearly wasted when the Cougars gave up a free kick with 30 seconds to go.

Grosse Pointe North's Don Robertson got the free kick past Stoney's defensive wall, but keeper Jacob Cowdrey was there to make the game-clinching save and secure a 1-0 win for the Cougars (6-2-2, 1-0-0 OAA Red).

Sitting in the Fraser press box on opening night of boys soccer season Aug. 23 were the athletic directors from Utica Eisenhower and Fraser, along with the public address announcer who has been involved with soccer in Macomb County for three decades.

None of them could remember the last time Fraser defeated Utica Eisenhower.

It’s never easy replacing three first-team All-State selections, but that is exactly the task Utica Eisenhower coach Josh VanHouten is facing.

The transition to find new goal-scorers was apparent in the Eagles’ season-opening contest, falling 1-0 to Fraser, a team it has not lost to in several years. The Eagles were in position to equalize several times, but they appeared to be gun-shy when given the opportunity to shoot.

Matt Lang said his personal goal for his senior season is to break Fraser’s single-season goal record, and he got off to a quick start in accomplishing that on Friday night.

With just more than four minutes gone in the season opener, Lang received a pass from Matt Lentine just inside the box and buried his shot in the top left corner of the goal. That goal proved to be enough for Fraser, as it held on to win 1-0 against Eisenhower, last year’s MAC Red champions and a team Lang had never beaten in his career at Fraser.
