GROSSE POINTE FARMS — There were few secrets in the June 11 Division 1 regional final matchup between Utica Stevenson and Fair Haven Anchor Bay.

For the Titans and Tars, who are Macomb Area Conference Red Division rivals, it marked the third meeting of the season.

The squads split games during the regular season, with Anchor Bay winning 2-1 May 6 and the Titans earning a 5-2 win in the second meeting May 27.

WILLIAMSTON — With under three minutes to play in the June 18 Division 4 state championship at Williamston, senior captain Erin Weide broke the tie, scoring the game-winning goal to lift the Ventures 2-1 past Lansing Christian.

The championship marks Foley’s 12th overall and first for coach Aaron Miller, who guided teams to the finals in 2008 and 2009 and finished runner-up.

TROY — Madison Heights Bishop Foley punched its ticket to the Division 4 state finals after a 3-0 win over Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central in a June 15 state semifinal at Troy Athens. The Ventures (17-6-2) will play at 3 p.m. June 18 at Williamston against Lansing Christian.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — Despite the fact that the squad had just bowed out of the state tournament in a 10-2 loss to Utica Stevenson in the June 11 Division 1 regional semifinals, there were more smiles than tears on the faces of the Grosse Pointe North softball team.

In fact, the Norsemen were celebrating.

Huddled up outside the home dugout, the Norsemen presented a cake to longtime coach Bill Taylor after what wound up being the final game in his coaching career.

In what marked their third meeting this season, Rochester Adams’ girls soccer had its season end in the form of a 3-0-shutout loss to Troy High in a June 4 Division 1 regional semifinal.

On April 12, the two squads battled to a 1-1 tie, and in a second meeting April 26, the Colts won 1-0.

Adams coach Aaron Donaghy said his team was simply beat by Troy in the regional.

PONTIAC — Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day got huge production out of its underclassmen to beat Williamston High 2-0 June 10 and claim a Division 3 regional soccer championship.

With a 3-1 win against Grand Blanc High in a Division 1 June 10 regional final, the Colts punched their ticket to the June 15 state semifinals.

Troy High (19-2-2), ranked No. 4 in the state among D-1 girls soccer teams, played No. 7-ranked Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central after press time. The winner advances to the final, which gets under way at noon June 18 at Michigan State University.

To arrive in the regional final, the Colts blanked Oakland Activities Association Red Division rival and No. 10-ranked Rochester Adams 3-0 June 7.

It was arguably the most competitive division in the state.

At the Division 3 girls state tennis finals June 3-4 at Kalamazoo College, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood edged defending champions Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day 33-32 to capture a state crown.

The Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association was right on with its rankings, tabbing the top two finishers No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, coming into the tournament. No. 3-ranked East Grand Rapids finished third with 26 points.

BEVERLY HILLS — One goal was all it took for Beverly Hills Hills Detroit Country Day’s girls soccer team to claim a Division 3 district title over Clawson High June 4.

Assistant girls soccer coach Paul Bartoshuk said sophomore Haley Verbeek has been practicing the shot that punched the Yellowjackets’ ticket to the regional round, where they faced Riverview Gabriel Richard June 7, after press time.

The June 4 Division 1 district final at Lake Orion between Rochester Adams and Clarkston High was a little like déjà vu.

Last year, the Highlanders defeated the Wolves 3-1 to advance out districts.

This year, Adams secured its second consecutive D-1 district championship with a convincing 5-0 win over Clarkston.

The Highlanders (15-2-3) faced league-rival Troy High June 7 in a regional semifinal at Lake Orion, after press time.

Macomb Area Conference girls soccer teams enjoyed another solid season in 2011.
Here’s a look at the division winners.

Utica Eisenhower, which was ranked No. 5 in Division 1 the coaches association’s May 22 poll and has won four of the last five division titles, finished first in the MAC Red at 9-0-1.

“Obviously, it’s an honor to win the division,” Utica Eisenhower coach Mehrdad Nekoogar said. “We had a goal at the beginning of the year. At the same token, we are looking ahead to more than just the MAC.”

The Red Hawks rode a 15-game winning streak to an Oakland Activities Association Red Division title, posting a 9-1 league to capture their third division crown in the past four years.

Bloomfield Hills Marian capped an unbeaten career for several seniors in the Catholic League in thrilling fashion.

The Mustangs defeated Livonia Ladywood 2-1 in overtime in the May 21 Catholic League A-B championship.

The win marked Marian’s seniors’ fourth Catholic League championship en route to a 51-0-1 career record in the Catholic League. At press time, the squad, ranked No. 1 in Division 2 by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association’s May 22 poll, was 13-2-2 overall.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — Utica Eisenhower coach Chris Layson knew his girls tennis squad needed to play great tennis to advance out of the Division 1 regional at Romeo High.

In every flight except No. 1 singles, the final match came down to a battle between Macomb Area Conference Red Division rivals Ike, which was ranked No. 9 in Division 1 by the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association’s May 16 polls, and Port Huron Northern, ranked No. 7.

The host Grosse Pointe South girls tennis captured a share of the Division 1 regional title May 19 with 26 points, tying Troy High. Also qualifying for the state finals were D-2 regional champions Grosse Pointe North and in D-4 winners Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett.
