It may be relatively early in the season, but the Mount Clemens girls varsity basketball team has already achieved half of its four team goals.

The first goal was to get off to a good start by winning their first game of the season. The Battling Bathers did just that, defeating Detroit Denby in their opening game.

Mount Clemens also wanted to make sure it came away with a victory against perhaps its biggest rival, the Clintondale Dragons. It can mark “mission accomplished” next to that goal, as well.

Mount Clemens has set a specific goal to win the MAC Gold Division this season, and it got started in the right direction in pursuit of that goal.

The Battling Bathers opened up league play Jan.10 with a 69-45 victory over Warren Mott.

“It’s always good to get a first league game,” said Mount Clemens coach Jason Monk. “You want to win that first game, because that just leads into other good things. It was important for us to come out and have a good showing, and I think we did that. I’m proud of the girls.”

While it is still too early to know exactly what this season has in store for Clawson’s girls varsity basketball team, one thing coach Kelly Horne can probably count on is having a team that is excited about the opportunity to don a Trojans uniform.

This marks Horne’s seventh season as varsity coach at the school, and she is observing a level of enthusiasm for Clawson basketball she has not experienced before.

Last season, the Sterling Heights girls varsity basketball team virtually ran away with the MAC Gold Division, as three games separated the Stallions from their closest competitor — the largest margin of victory for any division winner in the entire MAC conference.

L’Anse Creuse North posed the biggest threat to Sterling Heights’ quest for a MAC Gold championship.

Two seasons ago, Center Line stood at the top of its division and all was well with the girls varsity basketball program.

But what was a tremendous accomplishment then may have contributed to struggles later.

The Panthers won the now-defunct MAC Bronze, and following their banner season, they bypassed the MAC Silver and went straight to the MAC Gold.

Last season, they went 2-10 in the division. This year, at press time, they were off to an 0-1 start in league play following a loss to league foe L’Anse Creuse North and 2-4 overall.

The leadership and experience seniors can provide to a team is viewed as a precious commodity in the eyes of those who coach on the varsity level.

South Lake girls varsity basketball coach Shay Lewis will not be afforded any such luxuries, as the Cavaliers do not have a senior among them this season.

In fact, Lewis’ starting lineup consists of two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior.

The Madison Heights girls varsity basketball team will be fighting for more than just wins in the 2011-2012 season.

The Eagles have struggled in recent years, winning just three league games the past two seasons combined, and there is talk in their quarters of passing down a better legacy to those who will don a Madison uniform in seasons to come. You can count senior guard Alyssa Bennetts among those who want to play a part in laying down a new foundation for Eagles basketball.

Last season was a banner one for Clintondale’s girls varsity basketball team. The Dragons finished the season 12-5 overall and went 12-2 in league play en route to a MAC Silver championship.

Despite the success they enjoyed, from the players’ perspective, there may have been one slight glitch to the 2010-2011 season: The Dragons had to share their MAC Silver title with the New Haven Rockets.

Clintondale’s goal for the 2011-2012 season is to be a little bit greedier this time around.

It could be that members of the Warren Regina basketball and hockey teams have watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas” during this holiday season.

Perhaps they tuned into the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol.”

Regardless of how it came upon them, the athletes who suit up for the Saddlelites seem to have caught the Christmas spirit.

The bar has been raised for the Sterling Heights girls varsity basketball team, and that’s just the way coach Rick Repicky likes it.

The Stallions are coming off of a season that saw them go 14-7 overall and 11-1 in league play, en route to a MAC Gold title. Repicky hopes his current squad can inflict a similar type of damage in the MAC this season.

No matter the level of sport, most coaches seem to have one thing in common. They like to present challenges to their teams, and then wait and see how the players respond.

Lamphere girls varsity basketball coach Mike Kobus doesn’t need to think too long or too hard to find a challenge to put before his 2011-2012 team.

A quick glance at the roster makes it abundantly clear what message Kobus is delivering: Find a way to overcome the lack of senior leadership.

If what he has witnessed in practice is any indication of things to come, then Lake Shore girls basketball coach Jimmy Roehm likes his team’s chances of being in the thick of things in the MAC Gold this season.

There are a couple of assets that nearly every basketball coach hopes for when they look at their roster, and Roehm will have both of them to work with when his Shorians team takes to the court in 2011-2012.
