Roseville High’s and East Detroit’s baseball and softball teams bowed out of the state tournament in the district round.

In baseball, Roseville reached the finals, falling to Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse. The Panthers had defeated Warren Woods Tower in an earlier semifinal after receiving a first-round bye. Roseville wrapped up the year 6-15 overall. East Detroit, meanwhile, lost to Grosse Pointe North in its district game. The Shamrocks finished the year 12-18.

MADISON HEIGHTS — Utica Stevenson’s softball team’s lead disappeared just as quickly as it materialized. And just like that, with a bad case of déjà vu, the Titans were knocked out of the state tournament.

Stevenson fell 5-4 to White Lake Lakeland in a Division 1 state quarterfinal June 12 at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.

The game was tied 2-2 entering the seventh inning. The Titans were up first and brought two runners home on a bunt by junior shortstop Andrea Deneweth to take a 4-2 lead.

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — Warren Regina’s softball team fell in regional play after winning another district title this postseason.

The Saddlelites closed out the year with a 5-0 loss to Utica Stevenson in a Division 1 regional semifinal at Macomb L’Anse Creuse North June 9. Stevenson went on to win the regional title.

“You don’t hit, you don’t win,” Regina coach Diane Laffey said, noting her team’s lack of offense in the season-ending loss.

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — Utica Stevenson’s softball team has advanced to play in the state quarterfinals after winning the regional title at Macomb L’Anse Creuse North June 9.

Stevenson (26-9) defeated Anchor Bay 6-1 in the Division 1 regional final and advances to face White Lake Lakeland at 4 p.m. June 12 at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.

“It’s a thrill,” Stevenson coach Tony Misuraca said. “Quarterfinals, here we come.”

FRASER — Troy High edged Grosse Pointe South 1-0 in a girls soccer Division 1 regional final Friday, June 8 at Fraser High to advance to the state semifinals.

The Colts got the game’s only goal with just under 25 minutes to play when senior Irene Young slammed home a ricocheted ball after a high loft into the box by senior teammate Jennifer Busk.

“We all talk about keeping the ball alive,” Busk said. “Irene just finished it nicely.”

Walled Lake Western’s girls soccer won its district title before falling 3-0 to Midland Dow in a Division 1 regional semifinal June 5 at Lake Orion. Western defeated Walled Lake Central, White Lake Lakeland and Waterford Kettering en route to its district title. West Bloomfield and Walled Lake Northern also fell in that district’s opening round.

Utica Stevenson’s softball team displayed an extra flair for the dramatic this past regular season and wrapped up a title that was a long time coming.

Stevenson, which entered postseason play after press time, won a share of the Macomb Area Conference Red Division title on the final day of league play.

“We were very focused,” senior Jessica Berner said. “We knew that we had to settle down and get focused. This is our first MAC Red title in 28 years, so we were going to go hard all the way.”

FRASER — The Fraser High girls soccer team’s season came to an end May 29 as the district playoffs got under way across the state.

The Ramblers fell 2-1 at home against Grosse Pointe South in a postseason matchup that pitted two of the Macomb Area Conference’s top performers from the regular season against each other.

Fraser finished 16-4-0 overall and in first place of the MAC White Division with a 12-0-0 league mark, while South improved to 12-3-2 overall after going 6-2-2 in the MAC Red, finishing in second of that league.

The local girls soccer teams saw their respective seasons come to an end last week in district action.

In Division 1, Macomb L’Anse Creuse North advanced to its district final, but fell 4-1 to Fair Haven Anchor Bay in the title game. Earlier, the Crusaders beat Clinton Township Chippewa Valley 3-1 and Port Huron Northern 8-0 to advance to the final. LCN finished the season 4-12-5 overall.

After 30 years of patrolling the sidelines, winning five state titles in the process, varsity soccer Thaier Mukhtar will not be coaching the Pilots next season.

One of the most successful coaches in the state, Mukhtar is leaving the program he built into a powerhouse after a disagreement with administration.

“It’s kind of sad … to feel like you have to part ways because you have a difference of opinion with the administration,” he said.

De La Salle Athletic Director Brian Kelly commented on behalf of the school’s administration.

Macomb Dakota’s girls, Utica High’s boys and Macomb Lutheran North’s boys and girls track and field teams walked away with plenty of hardware after scoring the most points in their respective county championship competitions May 24 at Warren Mott.

Mott coach Mark Urquhart described the competition as a “wonderful night.”

According to a recent release by the Michigan High School Athletic Association, member schools have approved an amendment to the organization’s constitution and language for its handbook that will allow for waiver of the association’s age limit under certain circumstances.

In a vote of schools conducted this month, 701 of 1,535 MHSAA member senior high and junior high/middle schools cast legal ballots, and 94 percent approved of the change.

FRASER — Grosse Pointe South’s girls soccer team opened the district playoffs with a big win May 29, defeating Fraser High 2-1 on the road at Fraser.

South, which will take on Roseville High in a 5 p.m. May 31 district semifinal at Grosse Pointe North, opened the scoring with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half. Sophomore Katherine Collins recorded the goal for the Blue Devils.

Fraser knotted things up with a second-half goal by sophomore Madi Speck with a little more than 23 minutes to play.
